Police are investigating if human remains found on a vacant lot could be that of a 55-year-old missing man.

South Australian Police say a worker clearing long grass on the block in Salisbury South, Adelaide made the gruesome discovery of decomposing remains just before 2pm on Monday.

On Tuesday detectives returned to the block of land on Cheviot Road, with officers focusing on a group of trees and shrubs, clearing the area with whippersnippers and metal detectors.

McLean was last seen at his Andrews Farm home on August 18.

Earlier, on May 11, he was the victim of a horrific acid attack.

In that incident, he was doused in petrol and hydrochloric acid before he was hosed down by police.

He sustained burns to his head, shoulder and arm as a result of the attack. There is no suggestion the acid attack and disappearance are linked.

They say the circumstances around the death are being treated as suspicious.

Detective Inspector Brett Featherby said on Monday that forensic testing is underway on the human body, with the remains too decomposed to determine the age or sex of the victim.

CCTV footage from a neighbouring property has also been supplied to authorities.

SA Police Detective Inspector Brett Featherby said the block of land hadn’t been mown since March, with the grass more than 1.5m high at the time the decomposing body was found.

Nearby business owner Kevin Boyle told The Advertiser, ‘It was not really a place you’d have an accident.’

‘You don’t really find someone that far off the road, in a paddock that’s overgrown without something being a bit suss,’ he said.

Mr Boyle said the land has been empty for around 10 years and had never been well maintained.
