Youngkin makes Pelosi jab hours after her husband is attacked

Virginia‘s Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin is coming under fire for the way he brought up the hammer attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s husband Paul at a campaign rally Friday.

‘Speaker Pelosi’s husband, they had a break-in last night in their house, and he was assaulted, there’s no room for violence anywhere, but we’re going to send her back to be with him in California, that’s what we’re going to go do,’ Youngkin said as he campaigned for Republican Yesli Vega, who’s running against Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger.

Virginia Democratic Rep. Donald McEachin called it a ‘disgusting, vile, and crass comment by Governor Youngkin.’

‘While Paul Pelosi is currently undergoing brain surgery, Glenn Youngkin takes it as an opportunity for political jabs,’ McEachin tweeted. ‘This reprehensible behavior is beneath the dignity of his office.’

Other Republicans, including House Minority Whip Steve Scalise – a shooting victim in the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game practice attack – more directly condemned the violence.

‘Disgusted to hear about the horrific assault on Speaker Pelosi’s husband Paul. Grateful for law enforcement’s actions to respond,’ Scalise tweeted. ‘Let’s be clear: Violence has no place in this country. I’m praying for Paul Pelosi’s full recovery.’

The top Senate Republican, Sen. Mitch McConnell, also chimed in.

‘Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case,’ McConnell tweeted Friday.

Additionally, Tennessee Republican Sen. Bill Hagerty called the early morning assault ‘Horrific & sickening.’

‘Chrissy and I are praying for the whole Pelosi family & Paul’s speedy and full recovery,’ Hagerty said.

Ohio Republican Rep. Steve Chabot said he was ‘deeply distrubed’ by the violent attack on 82-year-old Paul.

‘Violence is never warranted and certainly has no place in our civil discourse,’ Chabot said. ‘The attacker should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.’

The attacker, identified by police as 42-year-old David DePape, had social media postings that pushed 2020 election and January 6 Capitol attack denialism, and a number of prominent right-wing conspiracy theories.

Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton, who retired from Congress instead of facing a Trump-backed primary challenger after voting in favor of the ex-president’s second impeachment, mentioned DePape’s social media postings in his tweet.

‘I am appalled by the horrific attack on Speaker Pelosi’s husband Paul,’ Upton said.

‘Like it or not, Jan 6 was real, and threats leading to violence-whether they are aimed at elected officials, Supreme Court Justices or local school board members-undermine our democratic form of government,’ he added.

During the January 6 Capitol attack, members of the MAGA mob specifically targeted Pelosi, trashing her office and calling out for her.
