Bogan-fest gets a visit from US ‘royalty’ as JFK’s daughter Caroline makes a VERY surprising appearance at Summernats to watch burnouts and pose for photos with mullet-loving revheads

  • Caroline Kennedy became the first US ambassador to attend Summernats
  • She enthusiastically filmed burnouts and posed with mullet champions
  • Her visit was popular with Aussies who described her as ‘a breath of fresh air’

Caroline Kennedy, the US ambassador to Australia known for her style and grace has made a surprising diplomatic visit to Summernats.

The daughter of revered former president John F Kennedy, made the low-key appearance to the motorsport festival in Canberra on Sunday, where she rubbed shoulders with everyday Aussies and posed for pictures with mullet-wearing revheads.

This year, 100,000 car enthusiasts attended and were treated to burnout competitions, drift rides and special performances by several stars over the four-day event.

But Ms Kennedy’s visit wasn’t promoted by the organisers – nor was it part of a  cringeworthy PR exercise.

Washington’s woman in Canberra embraced Summernats like a natural, getting to know the Dirty Mullet Fest entrants and taking a shine to the burnout championship.

Photos and video posted to to the official US Embassy page, show her laughing and smiling while enthusiastically filming hotrod’s smoke it up on the tarmac.

The normally elegant diplomat even nailed the dress code, turning up in a black long-sleeved t-shirt, jeans and a happily donning a Summernats cap while waving a ‘hang loose’ hand sign in photos with motorsport-lovers.

Ms Kennedy met some of the mechanics too and also took photos of the cars she liked the look of.

Her team posted to social media that she had ‘a great time’ at the event, which ran from January 5 to 8 in Canberra’s Exhibition Park.

Her highlights were the Dirty Mullet Fest, ‘especially meeting a few of the entrants, including Kyle who was shaving his luscious mullet off to raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation’.

She called it ‘a great day learning about Aussie cars and hairdos with new friends!’

She has embraced Australian culture in her first six months in the job.

The US Embassy also boasted that she was the first ambassador to ever to attend the event.

On social media, Ms Kennedy’s Summernats visit earned high praise from Australians.

One woman described her a ‘a breath of fresh air’.

‘You are such a good sport. What a credit to your country,’ another agreed.

It isn’t Ms Kennedy’s first brush with true Aussie culture.

In her brief tenure so far she has joined in with Aboriginal dancers, attended the Parkes Elvis Festival, driven a S***box Rally car and eaten a Bunnings sausage sandwich (which she paid for herself).

WHO IS CAROLINE KENNEDY?

Caroline Kennedy has been the American ambassador to Australia since last June, but she is much more than that.

Ms Kennedy, 65, has been a lawyer, author, career diplomat and is the only surviving child of legendary American president John F. Kennedy, aka JFK.

Aside from being America’s most famous political dynasty, the Kennedys are notable for being beset by multiple tragedies.

Caroline’s father was shot dead in 1963 while seated beside her mother Jacqueline Kennedy in an open-top limousine.

Five years later her uncle Robert was also assassinated.

Caroline’s infant brother Patrick died at two days old and her younger adult brother John jr died in a plane crash in 1999.

Several other family members also died untimely deaths.

Caroline Kennedy was previously US ambassador to Japan and is regarded as Democratic party royalty, and a close friend of current president Joe Biden.
