Today: Kyle Sandilands grills Allison Langdon on A Current Affair rumours

Today host Allison Langdon awkwardly dodged questions about her rumoured move to A Current Affair while interviewing Kyle Sandilands live on air on Monday.

The 43-year-old, who returned to the show that morning after taking more than a week off, shifted uncomfortably in her seat as she refused to confirm or deny the speculation – despite the shock jock, 51, repeatedly pushing for an answer.

‘Are you doing the A Current Affair or not?’ Sandilands asked.

Taken aback by the question, Langdon joked in response: ‘Well, I’m going to do the Today show, I’m going to do A Current Affair, I’m going to coach the Wallabies and I reckon Dan Andrews might offer me a ministry.’

‘She could be the premier!’ added her co-anchor Karl Stefanovic.

But Sandilands didn’t back down, and continued to push for a proper answer.

‘Let’s stop the speculation. Are you doing A Current Affair? Or has Jackie [Henderson, Sandilands’ radio co-host] gone off to do A Current Affair? I don’t know. Just tell us!’ he said.

Langdon remained tight-lipped about her potential move to prime time, hinting she could never ‘leave’ Stefanovic alone on the Today show.

‘I reckon this might be Jackie’s gig,’ she quipped, ‘because I sit next to this face – and who could leave this face?’

‘Well his face has been left before, let’s face it,’ Sandilands joked, before asking one more time, ‘Are you doing it or not?’ to which Langdon responded: ‘No.’

‘So you’re not doing it?’ he asked again.

‘Far out!’ Langdon exclaimed, which prompted Stefanovic to say: ‘With all this questioning, he should be doing A Current Affair!’

Hours earlier, Langdon had made an unannounced return to Today, following a week-long absence that fuelled rumours she was being promoted to A Current Affair.

‘Look who’s back!’ Stefanovic remarked at the start of the broadcast at 5:30am, alongside weatherman Tim Davies and fill-in newsreader Lara Vella.

Langdon then explained her absence, revealing she’d been ‘filming’ for 60 Minutes.

‘Filming was alright, it went well,’ she said. ‘And the kiddies, they’re all good. I’ve got them back in line… It is lovely to be back.’

Industry sources say Langdon is the hot favourite to replace Tracy Grimshaw as host of A Current Affair, but it’s unclear who will be taking her spot on Today.

Nine execs were understood to be trying out different co-anchors with Stefanovic last week, including former U.S. correspondent Amelia Adams and 60 Minutes reporter Sarah Abo.

Langdon, who first joined Today in early 2020, is said to be keen to move to ACA because the hours are easier as a working mother.

While Nine hasn’t made an announcement about the new host of ACA, the network is believed to only be considering candidates from within its own ranks.

This rules out The Project host Carrie Bickmore, who is leaving Channel 10 at the end of this month and was previously linked to the high-profile role.

Nine’s political reporter Chris O’Keefe has also been ruled out as a candidate after it was announced on Sunday he would be moving to 2GB.

O’Keefe will take over the 3pm drive show from January 9, a role that was previously held by Jim Wilson.

If Langdon does get the ACA job, she can add her name to an illustrious list that includes broadcast titans like Ray Martin, Mike Munro and Jana Wendt.

Coincidentally, her husband Mike Willesee Jr is the son of the late former ACA great Mike Willesee who hosted the program’s first three seasons and, later, a further five.
