Mark Walhberg SLAMMED for presenting SAG Award to Asian cast following past hate crime conviction

[ad_1]

Mark Wahlberg has been slammed for presenting an award to the predominately Asian cast of  Everything Everywhere All At Once at the 2023 SAG Awards on Sunday – 35 years after he was convicted of assaulting two Asian men.

The actor, 51, was convicted for assaults he committed at the age of 16 in 1988 in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood toward a pair of Vietnamese-American men named Johnny Trinh, who he punched; and Thanh Lam, who he knocked out with a wooden stick.

In 2014 the Oscar-nominated actor made an unsuccessful attempt to be pardoned for the assaults, in which investigators said he’d made remarks about ‘g***s’ and ‘slant-eyed g***s.’

The decision to have the actor present the final award of the night for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture – with Everything Everywhere’s cast including Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh and Vietnamese actor Ke Huy Quan – was heavily criticized and branded ’embarrassing for Hollywood’ on social media.

One user said, ‘Why did y’all let [Wahlberg] present an award to a mostly Asian cast after he hate crimed minorities…but ban will smith for a little slap’?

Another person said, ‘mark wahlberg the hate crimer giving the cast of eeaao their sag award and having to stand there during their speech when they were talking about the racism towards asians in hollywood.’

One user asked, ‘How did no one realize how problematic it is for [Wahlberg] to present an award to a historic asian led film when he has been openly racist for years and even blinded an asian man during a vicious attack??’

One user said that Wahlberg’s presence set against the predominantly Asian cast was ‘genuinely such an embarrassing thing for hollywood to do.’

Another wrote: ‘So, who’s the moron running the SAG Awards that okay’d Mark Wahlberg presenting the cast of EEAAO considering the man assaulted two Vietnamese men. Just saying, it’s in poor taste.’

Another penned: ‘Mark Wahlberg #SAGAwards2023 … presenting to #Asian cast of #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce @allatoncemovie… most SAG Awards … ever, including Best Picture … this history involves a man with a history of hate crime in Boston, including on Asians … trying to unpack this.’

One fan penned: ‘having mark wahlberg give the biggest trophy of the night to an asian majority cast… the SAG, the producers were cooking lmao.;

Wahlberg appeared a bit distracted during Sunday’s ceremony, as he made a number of verbal gaffes in his capacity as a presenter.

He called the name of the film Women Talking as Women Are Talking; and announced the group honor as the award for best actor.

He embraced actor Ke Huy Quan on the stage and was later seen posing with James Hong in a social media post, calling Hong a legend.

It was not the first time in recent years Wahlberg had faced backlash for his past.

In June of 2020, he was ripped online after posting a memorial to George Floyd, with many pointing to the actor’s hate conviction, and others claiming he’s edited his Wikipedia to try and hide his past.

The Boogie Nights star – who claimed that race was not a factor in the incident, as was only trying to steal beer – served 45 days in prison in connection with the 1988 incident, in which he was charged with attempted murder and eventually convicted of assault.

The actor, who added the hashtag Black Lives Matter into the post, was soon reviled on social media for the 1988 assaults.

Everything Everywhere All At Once nearly swept the film categories at the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night as Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan were all recognized with Brendan Fraser enjoying his comeback moment with a tearful speech as he earned a top honor.

The  American absurdist comedy-drama film also earned the top award of the night Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the star-studded event which took place place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, California.

The film beat out star-studded casts including: Babylon, The Banshees Of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, and Women Talking.

The 94-year-old acting legend said: ‘I got my first SAG card 70 years ago. My first movie was with Clark Gable but back in those days I have to tell you the leading role was played by guys with their eyes taped up and they talked like this because the producer said Asians are not good enough and they are not box office, but look at us now, huh?

‘As actors, we all want to belong to a tribe and that’s when I found where I belong. And if you told that guy back then that I’d be standing right here right now, I would not have believed you.’
