Cameron Diaz, 50, comes out of retirement: MailOnline takes a look at her biggest film hits

Cameron Diaz has officially returned to acting after she was pictured on the set of new Netflix film Back In Action in London on Thursday.

It comes four years after she confirmed her retirement and eight years after starring in her last movie.

The Charlie’s Angel’s star, 50, officially announced she was quitting acting in 2018 so she could dedicate more time to herself and her rocker husband Benji Madden, 43.

A year later, she welcomed daughter Raddix, three, in December 2019 and said she ‘couldn’t imagine’ leaving the child to embark on 14-hour shoot days.

So as Cameron returns to the spotlight MailOnline takes a look at some of her biggest movie moments…..

The Mask – 1994 

Cameron’s first big hit was in the outrageous comedy The Mask alongside funny man Jim Carrey.

The film established her as a leading lady, and as nightclub singer Tina Carlyle she even showcased her vocal skills. 

It followed the story of a hapless bank worker (Jim) who  turns into an eccentric and maniacal green-skinned superhero after wearing a magic wooden mask.

The film grossed over $351 million on a $18–23 million budget, which made it the most-profitable film based on a comic up to that point

There’s Something About Mary – 1998

In the NSFW comedy the actress played Mary Jensen and is remembered for one very rude scene.

The film follow’s Ben Stiller’s character Ted who attempts to track down his high-school sweetheart (played by Cameron).

The now iconic scene left Mary’s hair standing on end, quite literally, when she mistook a bodily fluid for hair gel.  

Charlie’s Angels & Charlies Angels: Full Throttle – 2000, 2003

Cameron played secret agent Natalie Cook in the action comedy and it’s sequel, alongside pal Drew Barrymore, 47,  and Lucy Liu, 54.

Based on the iconic 1970s series the trio worked for a private detective agency run by the mysterious and unseen Charlie. 

The action comedy star Cameron don numerous disguises and play off her ‘dumb blonde’ image and while it wasn’t a hit with critics the first movie raked in $264M worldwide. 

Drew Barrymore produced the movie through her Flower Films production company and cast her old friend.

Speaking about ‘sister’ Cameron to People Drew said: “We met when I was 14 and she was 16. I was working at a coffee house and she was a junior model’

However things were not so rosy behind the scenes with Lucy later branding co-star Bill Murray’s language on set ‘inexcusable’ – with the now scandal plagued actor not returning for the sequel.

The Holiday – 2006 

The festive favourite saw Cameron Diaz play Hollywood heavyweight Amanda Woods who falls in love with Jude Law’s English gentleman after swapping homes with Brit Kate Winslet.

While in the UK, Amanda finds romance with Iris’s book editor brother, while Kate’s character Iris meets musician Miles (played by Jack Black).

Earlier this month’s Kate, 47,  shut down claims a sequel to the smash hit 2006 film was is in the works – after it was claimed the original cast were reuniting for a new movie.

But Kate, who played journalist Iris in the rom-com, told People: ‘I read something about that, but it’s the first I’ve heard of it.

‘I promise you not an agent or a representative or anyone from the first one around has had any conversation with me about that. Hand on heart, that’s never come up.’

My Best Friend’s Wedding – 1997

Cameron stole the show in this now classic rom-com where she starred alongside Julia Roberts.

She played bride to be Kimberley Wallace who’s wedding is about to be sabotaged by the Erin Brockovich star. 

Cameron again showcased her vocals (but less impressively) with an excruciating karaoke scene.   

Being John Malkovich – 1999 

Cameron made a rare break from glamour and looked almost unrecognisable in the black comedy Being John Malkovich.

John Cusack played a puppeteer who finds a portal that leads into actor john Malkovich’s mind, with Cameron as his partner Lotte Schwartz.

The actress wore a large brunette wig for the role and dowdy clothes, with her performance garnering critical acclaim.

Cameron voiced the role of Princess Fiona in the Sony comedy which spawned numerous sequels and specials.

Turning fairy tales on their heads Fiona was cursed to be an Ogre, only to find love with fellow green monster Shrek in the process.

Bad Teacher – 2011

The raunch comedy saw the blonde beauty star alongside her former beau and singer turned actor Justin Timberlake, 41. 

With the intention of getting a breast implant, Cameron’s boozy character Elizabeth becomes a high school substitute teacher much to the student’s chagrin.

Her character, seventh grade teacher Elizabeth Halsey, tries to get out of the classroom for good by wooing a rich substitute teacher, played by her pop star ex. 

The couple dated for three years before splitting and starring together in the comedy five years later. 

Speaking about working with her former beau she told Good Morning America at the time it was easy because they ‘know their boundaries’. 

When asked if the sex scenes were awkward she added: ‘It was easier because the boundaries were clear. Like if it’s somebody you don’t know you are kind of going ‘mmm maybe’ but you know, ‘no’, in this instance we’re like ‘we already did that’,’ she giggled.
