Woman, 33, dies and two more are fighting for life after getting crushed during stampede at concert

A 33-year-old woman has died and two people are fighting for their lives after they were crushed during a stampede at a concert in Rochester.

The female victim and eight others were crushed during a show by GloRilla and Finesse2Tymes after thousands of concertgoers surged towards the exits of the Main Street Armory venue last night at around 11.05pm. 

The concertgoers had become panicked and rushed for the exits after they mistakenly thought they heard the sound of gunshots amidst the loud music.

Rochester police said there was no shooting at the venue but some in the panicked crowd were injured during the stampede.

‘All I know, it was a lot of running. A lot of people got hurt. I see people on the ground, like hurt badly,’ one witness told News10NBC. ‘It was deathly packed. So I knew I had to get up out of there,’ he added.

Footage from inside the venue showed security officers and concertgoers trying to help people who had collapsed on the ground 

Police officers arrived at the venue, which can accommodate up to 5,000 people, following a report of shots fired inside the music venue and found several injured victims on the floor.

Emergency crews rushed a 33-year-old woman and two other victims to Strong Memorial Hospital in an ambulance. The woman died as a result of her injuries, while the two concertgoers are in a critical, life-threatening condition. 

Six more victims were rushed to hospital in private vehicles – their injuries are not considered life threatening. 

Rochester police said that whilst they had attended the scene following a report of a shooting, detectives have determined that none of the injuries that the victims’ sustained were consistent with a person being shot.

‘At this time, there is no evidence to support a shooting having occurred inside the event,’ Lt Nicholas Adams of the Rochester police department said. 

‘The injuries appear to be as a result of a large crowd pushing towards the exits following accounts of individuals hearing what they believed to be gunshots.’

GloRilla, who was performing at the venue, tweeted in the early hours of this morning: ‘I’m just now hearing about what happened. Praying everybody is ok.’
