William Shatner, 91, ‘doesn’t have long left to live’ as he makes a documentary about his life

William Shatner has candidly discussed his own mortality ahead of the release of a documentary about his illustrious career entitled You Can Call Me Bill.

The 91-year-old Star Trek legend said he ‘doesn’t have long to live’ but decided to make the movie as a way of being about to ‘reach out to his grandchildren’ after his death.

Speaking to Variety he said: ‘I’ve turned down a lot of offers to do documentaries before. But I don’t have long to live’. 

‘Whether I keel over as I’m speaking to you or 10 years from now, my time is limited, so that’s very much a factor. I’ve got grandchildren. This documentary is a way of reaching out after I die.’ 

The film, directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, will premiere at the upcmoing SXSW Film Festival in Texas.

Speaking about his family to The Guardian in 2014 he said: ‘Being a grandparent is the greatest joy for me. I have the time now to grab a grandchild and talk, and hug and kiss them and make sure that I’m taking time to be with them and to give them some aspect of the things I’ve learned’.

‘Family life is totally encompassing. I see my daughters every weekend. And we go off on holidays together — everything from skiing to snorkeling’.

It comes after William reunited with ex-wife Elizabeth Martin, three years after their $2million split

The actor got back together with Elizabeth, 64, and attended the Living Legends of Aviation Awards in Beverly Hills in January.

Speaking to The Mirror, William wasn’t shy about discussing the couple’s rekindled passion, saying: ‘My wife… she is the zest of life. She brings the flavour.’ 

 The couple then discussed how to best describe that ‘spice’ to which William jokingly said: ‘Mustard?’ while Elizabeth added: ‘Cinnamon’.

The Avaiaton Awards, which were hosted by John Travolta, is believed to be the first red carpet event the couple have attended since reuniting.

He also paid Elizabeth a lump sum of $2 million for spousal support per their prenuptial agreement, ‘ TMZ reported. 

As part of the settlement, William kept his Studio City home and a ranch in Three Rivers, California (near Sequoia National Park).

Elizabeth got their Malibu Cove home and their home in Versailles, Kentucky and a share of her family farm in Indiana.

She also kept the 2015 Mercedes Benz ML65, 2007 BMW X5 and a 2004 Ford Explorer.

William was previously married to Gloria Rand from 1956 until their divorce in 1969; they have three children: Leslie, Lisabeth and Melanie.

His second wife was to Marcy Lafferty, from 1973 to 1996 and his third was Nerine Kidd Shatner, whom he married in 1997.

She died in August 1999 after an accidental drowning in their swimming pool; the 40-year-old had alcohol and Valium in her blood at the time of death.

He married Elizabeth two years later in 2001.
