Former President Donald Trump offered his own commentary on the blockbuster Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard trial on Tuesday, sarcastically saying they seemed like a ‘lovely couple’ after weeks of accusations of domestic abuse on both sides,
Depp has claimed she threw a vodka bottle at him in early 2015, severing one of his fingers, and that she once defecated on his side of the bed, an allegation she denied (saying her dog was responsible).
Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 36, for defamation after she wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post referring to herself as a ‘public figure representing domestic abuse.’
The result has been day after day of tabloid fodder as the two actors battle it out in a Virginia courtroom.
‘Has anybody been watching the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial? What a lovely couple,’ said Trump on his Truth Social media platform, before slighting the Washington Post with an aside.
‘First of all, Johnny sued her for writing an article in a tiny “outlet,” that practically nobody read, because he didn’t want to get bad publicity. How did that work out?’
Trump goes on to point out that many more people now know about their tumultuous relationship as the result of the court case.

Trump took a dig at the Washington Post and also said Depp and Heard were a ‘lovely couple’ after weeks of claims that each abused the other during a tempestuous relationship
Depp is suing Heard for a piece she wrote in the Washington Post in which she described herself as a ‘public figure representing domestic abuse.’ He has denied abusing her
Heard countersued for $100 million, claiming that her career had been damaged after Depp’s lawyer said her claims of abuse were a hoax. The result is a high-profile court showdown
‘She countersued for $100 million.
‘The charges are many & salacious, the nicest of which is that she threw a bottle at him and it took off his finger – She must have a Sandy Koufax type arm,’ he wrote, referencing the former Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher.
‘Will they get back together and live happily in PEACE?’
Heard’s $100 million counterclaim says she was defamed by Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman, when he called her original accusations a hoax.
She finished giving evidence on Monday.
The jury was shown photos of red marks on her face and heard testimony about her skill in use make-up to hide bruises.
Depp previously testified that he never struck Heard. Instead he said that he was the victim of her tirades and ‘demeaning name calling.
‘It could begin with a slap, it could begin with a shove, it could begin with throwing a TV remote at my head, throwing a glass of wine in my face,’ he said when giving evidence.
He described one incident in 2015 when the couple were in Australia on location for the fifth ‘Pirates of the Caribbean film. Depp said Hear was angry about a postnuptial agreement and threw a bottle of vodka which shattered, injuring his hand.
‘The tip of my finger had been severed and I was looking directly at my bone sticking out,’ he testified.
Heard and Depp are pictured on their honeymoon in February 2015. ‘Johnny slapped me across the face and got a hold of my neck and pushed me up against the wall of the car. It was a small narrow sleeper car,’ she claimed in court
It was during that fight that Heard says she was sexually assaulted.
She was questioned about the details during cross-examination on Tuesday by Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez
She asked Heard why she never sought medical attention, even though she said her feet were cut by broken glass and she was bleeding after the attack.
‘You’re the one who assaulted someone with a bottle in Australia, isn’t that right, Ms. Heard?’ Vasquez asked.
‘I didn’t assault Johnny in Australia. I didn’t assault Johnny ever,’ Heard responded.
Earlier the court was shown Depp and Heard’s ‘love journal’ in which they write to each other.
In a diary entry on May 22, 2015, Heard wrote: ‘True love isn’t about just the madness of passion or picking the safety of peace. It’s about having both. I have seen in you the true bones of friendship and respect but I still more than ever want to rip you apart, devour you and savor the taste.’
Her account of their relationship differed dramatically from Depp’s. She described a pattern of him lashing out while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Violence would often follow accusations that she was cheating on him, she testified.
‘He would explode,’ she said, describing how he would punch walls before slapping her.
