Thousands took to the streets of Sao Paulo for 26th Gay Pride Parade after two years of virtual events due to coronavirus.

This year the Pride march was called Vote With Pride and was back in full swing in the Brazilian city.

Claudia Garcia, president of the LGBT charity running the parade, said: ‘After two years without in-person editions, it is an immense pleasure to return to the streets and reinforce to the public its responsibility to support representatives who are committed to a more just and egalitarian Brazil

‘That is why in our campaign we endorse the need for attention with the upcoming elections.’

Organisers added: ‘In its 26th edition, São Paulo’s LGBT+ Pride Parade is back in defence of a fundamental theme: vote with pride – for a policy you represent.

‘The event takes place on June 19 and reaffirms the commitment to the fight against any type of discrimination, in addition to promoting respect for diversity and the construction of affirmative policies for the LGBT+ population.’

Although same-sex marriage has been legal in the country since 2013 there are few laws protecting the LGBT community.

People also face negativity and Brazil has one of the highest LGBT murder rates in the world.

Sao Paulo’s Pride march is one of the largest in the world with millions going each year.

The city is also home to the biggest gay club in the Americas, called The Week.
