‘I am begging you on my hands and knees, do something!’ Sandy Hook congressman Chris Murphy begs Senate for gun reform after shooter, 18, kills 14 kids and a teacher at Uvalde elementary school

  • Chris Murphy, now the Democratic Senator for Connecticut, was the Congressman for the district where Sandy Hook is in 2012
  • On Tuesday, he told the Senate he was ready to beg ‘on his hands and knees’ for reform
  • It was after shooter Salvador Ramos, 18, shot and killed 14 kids at Robb Elementary School
  • He was seen approaching the school with what looked like an assault rifle
  • Murphy pleaded with Republicans to pass some kind of gun reform
  • ‘What are we doing? Why are we here? What are we doing? I yield the floor,’ he said

Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy made an impassioned plea to the Senate to enact gun reform on Tuesday in the wake of the Uvalde elementary school shooting, ten years after the Sandy Hook massacre which happened in his district.

Murphy was the Democratic Congressman for Connecticut’s fifth district – which took in the school – when gunman Adam Lanza opened fire in December 2012.

On Tuesday, after fourteen kids and a teacher were shot dead at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, he made a desperate plea to Republicans to pass laws that would put an end to such atrocities.

‘Fourteen kids dead in an elementary school in Texas right now. What are we doing? What are we doing? Just days after a shooter walked into a grocery store to gun down African American patrons, we have another Sandy Hook on our hands. What are we doing?!

‘As the kids run for their lives, we doing nothing. What are we doing? Why are you here if not to solve a problem as existential as this? This isn’t inevitable. These kids weren’t unlucky. This only happens in this country and nowhere else,’ he said.

He went on: ‘I am here on this floor to beg. To literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues: find a path forward here. Pass laws that make this less likely.’

CHRIS MURPHY’S FULL ‘WHAT ARE WE DOING SPEECH?’ ON GUN REFORM AFTER UVALDE SHOOTING

‘Fourteen kids dead in an elementary school in Texas right now. What are we doing? What are we doing? Just days after a shooter walked into a grocery store to gun down African American patrons, we have another Sandy Hook on our hands. What are we doing?!

‘There have been more mass shootings than days in the year. Our kids are living in fear. Every single time they set foot in the classroom they think they’re going to be next. Why do you spend all this time running for the United State Senate? Why do you go through all the hassle of getting this job if your answer is that the slaughter increases?

‘As the kids run for their lives, we doing nothing. What are we doing? Why are you here if not to solve a problem as existential as this? This isn’t inevitable. These kids weren’t unlucky. This only happens in this country and nowhere ‘else.

‘Nowhere else do little kids go to school thinking that they might be shot that day. Nowhere else do parents have to talk to their kids as I have had to do. It is a choice. It is our choice to let it continue. What are we doing?

‘In Sandy Hook Elementary School after those kids came back into those classrooms they had to adapt a practice in which there would be a safe word the kids would say if they started to get thoughts in their brain about what they saw that day.

‘If they started to get nightmares about stepping over their classmates body. In one classroom, that word was ‘monkey’. Over and over and over again the kids would stand up and yell ‘monkey!’

‘Sandy Hook will never ever be the same. This community n Texas will neve ever be the same. Why are we here if not to try to make sure that fewer communities go through what Sandy Hook went through, what Uvalde is going through?

‘Our heart is breaking for these families. Every ounce of love and thoughts and prayers we can send, we are sending.

‘But I am here on this floor to beg. To literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues: find a path forward here. Work with us to find a way to pass laws that make this less likely. There is a common denominator that we can find. There’s a place where we can achieve agreement that may not guarantee that America never ever again sees a mass shooting, that may not overnight cut in half the number… it will not solve the problem of American violence itself.

‘But by doing something we at least stop sending this quiet message of endorsement to these killers who see the highest levels of of government doing nothing shooting after shooting.

‘Why do you spend all this time running for the United States Senate … if your answer is that, as the slaughter increases, as our kids run for their lives, we do nothing? What are we doing? Why are you here?

The gunman in Tuesday’s shooting in Texas has been named as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos.

He was seen entering the school with what looks like an assault rifle before he opened fire.

It is believed he shot his grandmother dead before traveling to the elementary school where he indiscriminately attacked kids.

The school has around 500 students aged between seven and nine. It is 90 percent Hispanic, and there are some 70 students.

The gunman’s motive remains unclear. He was killed by police at the scene.

Murphy’s comments on the Senate floor were echoed by other Democrats, including New York’s Kathy Hochul.

She tweeted: ‘I’m heartbroken for the victims of today’s horrific shooting in Texas. You should be able to go to school, and to church, and to the grocery store without needing to worry that you’re not going to come home.

‘It’s past time to put an end to these needless tragedies.’

The former chair of the RNC, Michael Steele, tweeted: ‘Fourteen children and a teacher have been killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Texas. Again, another school shooting. Again, mothers and fathers will have lost a child.

‘Again, politicians will offer their “shock” and their “prayers”. We will move on in a week. Again.’

The Democratic Governors of California and New Jersey also decried the tragedy in tweets.

President Biden will address the nation tonight.
