Rupert Grint fully supports Harry Potter TV adaption and discusses Dumbledore actors’ death

Rupert Grint has thrown his support behind a Harry Potter TV series amid rumours studio bosses are already considering adapting the franchise

The actor, 34, who played the wizard’s pal Ron Weasley in all eight movies, said he thought it ‘work really well’.

Speaking to GQ Hype he also discussed the death of actor Richard Harris, who played headteacher Albus Dumbledore in the first two movies, admitting it was a difficult thing to contemplate as a 13-year-old.

He told the publication: ‘I’d love to see Harry Potter be adapted into a TV show. I think it would really work. I’m sure the films will get remade, anyway’.

He revealed that Richard’s death, in 2002 aged 72 after a battle with cancer, was the first loss he had ever experienced.

‘I was 13, in a hotel promoting the second movie, when I was told. It was a hard thing to contemplate.’

Richard was later replaced in the role by Michael Gambon, now 82.

Rupert looked suave in the shoot modelling a navy tweed sports coat before donning a smart suit for the cover.

He went on to discuss the loss of other cast members  including Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape, and Helen McCrory, Narcissa Malfoy, describing them as family.

‘Not parents but uncles or grandparents. They all had this kind of subconscious presence in my life.’

Both actors also lost their battles with cancer, with Helen passing away aged 52 in 2021 and Alan in 2016 aged 69.  

It comes after Rupert  confirmed he would be prepared to return in some form as long as ‘the timing was right and everyone was coming back’.

Speaking during an appearance on This Morning on Thursday, Rupert admitted he feels ‘protective’ over Ron and would like to see what he is up to now because the role was his ‘whole childhood’.

Phillip asked: ‘You would bring Ron back? You wouldn’t actually be opposed to see what he is up to now?’

Rupert replied: ‘I think if the timing was right and everyone was coming back. It was a character that was important to me, we kind of became the same person. 

‘I’m protective of him as well. It was my whole childhood.’

Joking about his lack of acting credentials prior to bagging the role in the film adaptation of the much-loved JK Rowling novel, he added: ‘I was a fish in a school play before that!’

The actor starred alongside Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), both 32, in the Wizarding World for eight films. 

Two decades after first hitting screens, the trio reunited in 2021 as they returned to Hogwarts for the franchises 20th anniversary at the Warner Bros Studios.  

Rupert is now starring in a new psychological thriller, Knock At The Cabin – his first film role in eight years.
