Two policed officers, a male and female in their 20s, are dead in an unfolding emergency after they were shot as they approached a rural Queensland property.
The gunshots sparked a massive police operation in the town of Wieambilla, south of Chinchilla and about three hours west of Brisbane, with an emergency declaration made after 6pm on Monday and two gunman still on the loose.
Nearby residents have been ordered to stay in their homes with police issued weapons also feared to have been lifted from the officers.
At least four police officers went to the house about 4.40pm to enquire about a missing person when they were fired upon. Three officers were hit and one escaped to be rushed to Chinchilla Hospital with a leg wound.
A fourth female officer was briefly unaccounted for – but is understood to now have made it to safety.

Police were called to the property and were fired upon from inside with several more police crews rushing to the scene
There could be two gunman with one wearing camouflage and who walked outside and shot the officers again as they lay injured on the ground, reports The Australian.
Police-issued Glock pistols were then reportedly lifted from the bodies and a fire was lit in an attempt to smoke out the remaining officers who sought cover.
Queensland Police said ‘several’ police crews are now in attendance at the property.
The public has been told to avoid the area and nearby residents within the emergency zone – declared under the Public Safety Preservation Act – must remain indoors.
‘Wains Road is closed, and the declaration zone encompasses the area between Chinchilla Tara Rd, Wieambilla Rd, Bennetts School Rd, and Mary Street,’ Queensland police said.
Police helicopters and officers from Queensland’s Special Emergency Response Team are in attendance.
Paramedics and two LifeFlight helicopters were also dispatched to the scene.
