Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul was violently assaulted with a hammer in their home in the early morning hours of Friday morning by a male assailant who broke in and attacked him.Ā Ā

The intruder is in custody and Paul Pelosi, 82, is in hospital expected to make a full recovery, the speaker’s office said.Ā

The suspect broke into the home through a back entrance and used a hammer to assault the speaker’s husband, law enforcement sources told CNN. There is video of the break-in.

Paul Pelosi suffered from blunt force trauma injuries to his head and body in the attack, the Associated Press reported. He was being treated for bruising, severe swelling and other injuries.

The assault occurred at 2:27 a.m. at the Pelosis’ $6million property in the exclusive San Francisco neighborhood of Pacific Heights.

President Joe Biden spoke with Speaker Pelosi this morning. He condemned the violence.

‘The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosiā€™s whole family,’ said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement. ‘This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The President continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the familyā€™s desire for privacy be respected.’

The suspect has not been named and the motivation of the assault are under investigation, her office said, but the home of the millionaire couple has been the frequent target of protests.

In January 2021, a pigā€™s head was left outside her garage door with red paint in a demonstration saying $2,000 COVID relief checks were not enough.

Speaker Pelosi, who has been in Europe and on the campaign trail with DemocratsĀ in recent days, was not in San Francisco at the time of the attack.Ā

She was in Washington D.C. home with her protective security detail, U.S. Capitol Police said. As speaker of the House she has a fulltime security detail with her but her husband would not have federal protection.

She is scheduled to address a gala for the Human Rights Campaign with Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington D.C. on Saturday evening.

The San Francisco Police Department said Police Chief William Scott will address the media later Friday morning about the incident. The SFPD, U.S. Capitol Police and FBI are conducting a joint investigation.Ā

Paul Pelosi made headlines earlier this year when he was arrested for DUI in Napa Valley when he crashed his Porsche near one of the properties in their portfolio.

Political attacks have been on the rise this year.Ā

Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida claimed that one of his supporters was attacked while out canvassing this week.Ā  And Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he’s received death threats against himself and his family after serving on the committee investigating the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol.

‘Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi,’ Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said in a statement Friday.

‘The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery,’ Hammill added.

The family requested privacy.Ā

‘The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,’ Hammill said.

Well wishes poured in for the 82-year-old.

‘What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act,’ Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. ‘I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.’

‘I wish Mr Pelosi well & pray for a quick recovery Everyone deserves 2b respected & violence is never okay,’ tweeted Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa.Ā

Pelosi is second in line for the presidency and one of the highest-ranking women in government.Ā

She is also one of the most well-known members of the House and is a frequent Republican target in election years, when they attempt to tie Democratic candidates to the liberal speaker from San Francisco.Ā

It’s not the first time the Pelosi home has been targeted.Ā

In January of last year, the Pelosis’ Pacific Heights home was vandalized overnight with a pig’s head surrounded in a pool of red paint, as well as a spray-painted message appearing to allude to the failed $2,000 stimulus checks.Ā

After the January 6th insurrection that saw Donald Trump’s MAGA supporters swarm the Capitol to try and stop the certification of the presidential election, lawmakers were given greaterĀ leniency to spend their campaign funds on security.Ā

And threats of physical violence increased.

In the five years after Trump was elected president in 2016, the number of recorded threats against members of Congress increased more than tenfold, to 9,625 in 2021, according to figures from the Capitol Police.

In the first quarter of 2022, the latest period for which figures were available, the force opened 1,820 cases, the New York Times found.

Republican Senator Susan Collins had her home vandalized with a storm window broken this election year.

‘I wouldn’t be surprised if a senator or House member were killed,’ Collins told The New York TimesĀ earlier this month. ‘What started with abusive phone calls is now translating into active threats of violence and real violence.’Ā

Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, a frequent target of Trump’s wrath, has spentĀ $70,000 on security measures.Ā

Democratic Rep. Cori Black, a prominent black liberal, hasĀ spent the most among House lawmakers: close to $400,000. She has said she’s received multiple death threats.
