11 students suffer burns and are rushed to hospital after an explosion during a science experiment gone wrong at a public school on Sydney’s northern beaches

A dozen people have suffered burns when a science experiment sparked an explosion at a public school on Sydney’s northern beaches.Â
The explosion occurred around 1:45pm at Manly West Public School in Balgowlah.
It’s understood a school science experiment involving sodium bicarbonate, sugar and methylated spirits caused the blast.
Eleven students and a male teacher have suffered partial to superficial burns.Â

One student was rushed via ambulance to Westmead Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.Â
Another student was also taken to Westmead via helicopter and is in a stable condition.
Five children were taken to Royal North Shore hospital and the remaining four were transported to Northern Beaches Hospital.
AÂ NSWÂ Ambulance spokeswoman said several road crews and a specialist medical team on board the CareFlight helicopter were responding.

More than a dozen paramedics and multiple fire and rescue crews are at the scene.
There are also five police units at the school.Â
The situation is said to be ‘under control’.Â
Mother Peta, whose children were not involved in the incident, said she rushed to the school when she heard about the explosion.
‘It is a bit scary’
‘When I drove past and saw teachers at the front that was when I knew something bad had happened.’
‘The whats app group was pinging because when you tried to ring the school you couldn’t get through. Someone said that it was year 5 and those involved’s parents had been called, so that made me feel more at ease that it was not my ones.’
