‘Why didn’t I know about cherry juice earlier? I have taken so many supplements to help me go to sleep, stay asleep… all I needed was some cherry juice?

‘I saw a video on here that said, “Drink one cup and you’ll be out.” 15 minutes in and I was out. I didn’t wake up once through the night.

‘So, if you haven’t tried it and you’re having trouble sleeping, baby, get you some tart cherry juice. It works.’

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Alana revealed:  ‘Since the day I tried it, I haven’t gone without it! It works extremely well for me, and I really believe this will be a part of my routine forever.’

She explained: ‘I will drink it around 8:30 p.m. after finishing my night routine and I will sleep within 15–30 minutes.’

Alana praised the juice, and even medical experts even chimed in to confirm it’s sleep healing powers.

Nutritional therapy practitioner, Megan Abbott, took to TikTok to detail whether or not tart cherry juice was ‘worth the hype.’

‘There’s a lot of hype around tart cherry juice right now and is it really worth it? Well the studies are actually pretty clear, so yes.’

The nutritionist added that tart cherry juice is ‘anti-inflammatory’ and helps ‘reduce stress’ before noting you should drink it.

‘If you have issues sleeping, falling asleep at night or staying asleep, [tart cherry juice] does have a little bit of tryptophan in it, which can help boost melatonin production, which is going to help you sleep a little bit better.’

Megan then explained you should start by drinking a third to a half a cup, but should ‘make sure’ there aren’t ‘massive amount of sugar’ in the juice you purchase.

Another TikTok user, Sarah Jayne, who is also a gut health expert, praised the tart cherry juice on her social media and revealed it does more than just help you sleep.

And if you don’t want to just take the TikToker’s word for it, research from Louisiana State University found that drinking tart cherry juice twice a day for two weeks helped boost sleep time by nearly 90 minutes among older adults with insomnia.

According to Cleveland Clinic, insomnia affects up to 70 million people every year and insomnia symptoms occur in about 33 to 50 per cent of adults.

And the condition that is defined as trouble sleeping on average more than three nights per weeks can even cause long-lasting problems for your health.

Insomnia is linked to chronic pain, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and dementia.

According to Frank L. Greenway, the co-author behind the research, many resort to sleeping pills to help them get a bit more snooze time, but it isn’t an effective process for everyone.

‘Sleeping pills may be an option for younger insomniacs, but for older people these medications quadruple the risk of falling, which can lead to broken hips and, often, earlier death.’

Researchers found that those who drank tart cherry juice in the morning and night were able to sleep more than an hour longer each night.

Tart cherries are a natural source of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate your sleep cycle, and while many studies have shown the fruit’s melatonin-boosting effects, Greenway and colleagues proved exactly why and how these tart cherries help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

They found that tart cherry juice helped to increase the availability of tryptophan, an essential amino acid and a precursor to serotonin that aids with sleep.

The juice was also shown in cells to inhibit an enzyme (indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase) that decreases tryptophan.

Tryptophan degradation is a known predictor of insomnia and is also related to inflammation, said co-authors Jack Losso and John Finley, professors in the School of Nutrition and Food Sciences at Louisiana State University Agricultural Center.

‘Even though the amount of tryptophan in tart cherry juice is smaller than a normal dose given to aid sleep, the compounds in tart cherries could prevent the tryptophan from breaking down so it’s able to work in the body more effectively,’ Greenway explained.

‘These compounds may help to improve tryptophan bioavailability for serotonin synthesis, which could have a positive effect on sleep. Increasing serotonin also helps improve mood and decrease inflammation.’

And after conducting research, Greenway and his colleagues found that drinking tart cherry juice in the morning and the evening may be a better and safer alternative to treating insomnia.
