India cruised to the top of their group after beating Bangladesh by 5 runs via the Duckworth Lewis System. In the seventh over of Bangladesh’s run-chase Kohli was spotted in an illegal act of ‘fake fielding’ that wasn’t picked up by the umpires
Despite a brave effort, Bangladesh could only manage 6-145 – but the match wasn’t without controversy.
In the seventh over of Bangladesh’s run chase Kohli was spotted in an illegal act of ‘fake fielding’ that wasn’t picked up by the umpires.
The Indian skipper could be seen pretending to field a throw from an outfielder while the opposition were running between wickets in an apparent attempt to deceive the opposition and create a chance for a run-out.
The ICC has a ‘fake fielding’ rule that states: ‘It is unfair for any fielder willfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball.’
By the letter of the law, Kohli should have been penalised five runs for the incident – which would have seen Bangladesh run out winners.
Tigers wicket keeper Nurul Hasan was one of the many who was annoyed by the illegal incident.
‘You saw that we had to play in a wet outfield, but there was also a case of fake fielding which also didn’t go our way,’ he told the press afterwards.
Fans were left incensed by Kohli’s actions and that they didn’t result in an extra five runs for Bangladesh.
‘Kohli was spotted distracting Shanto by “fake fielding.” As per the law, India was supposed to be given 5 runs penalty for such a shameful. But guess what? The on-field umpires didn’t even care to recheck and instantly denied taking any action,’ said one Twitter user.

‘Kohli is such a disgrace to the game. Cheater,’ complained another.
‘Fake fielding. 5 run penalty. Missed by umpires. Of course’ said a third.
India will play Zimbabwe in their last group game on Sunday.
South Africa will play Pakistan on Thursday and the Netherlands on Sunday, while Bangladesh go against Pakistan on Sunday.
