Germany has crashed out of the World Cup during group stages for the second year in a row – crushing fans hopes of glory and leaving exhausted players in tears on the pitch.

After failing to win either of their first two matches, Germany needed a victory over Costa Rica tonight and for Spain to beat Japan.

While they came from behind to beat Costa Rica 4-2, Japan secured first place in Group E with a 2-1 victory over Spain, leaving Hansi Flick’s men in third place and Costa Rica at the bottom of the table.

The Germans hit the post three times during Thursday’s match in what will no doubt haunt the players as they’re sent packing this early in the tournament.

But it’s one particular call from the Japan-Spain match which is already causing the most controversy.

Japan managed to keep the ball in play by mere millimetres before going on to score the goal which ultimately kept Spain at bay.

Already, fans have taken to social media to label it a ‘dodgy goal’, while German media criticises the national team for the ‘humiliating’ defeat.

‘Germany have been knocked out of the World Cup by a couple of millimetres,’ one fan said, with another adding: ‘It couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch.’

Meanwhile during the Japan-Spain match, one particular call which went the way of Japan is likely to spark outrage among German diehards. Japan managed to keep the ball in play by mere millimetres before going on to score the goal which ultimately kept Spain at bay

A potential early exit from the World Cup was earlier branded ‘a disaster times 10’ for the Germans – with some warning it could spell the end for Flick’s run as coach.

They last reached the last 16 at Euro 2020 but were beaten 2-0 by England.

The humiliating elimination will be well received by England fans after a long and well documented rivalry between the two sides.

It comes after world ranked number two, Belgium, was knocked out of the tournament earlier today.

In Group F, Morocco topped the table and progressed to the final 16 with Croatia after the shock elimination.
