A Ferrari driver who smashed head-on into a row of five parked vehicles has been banned from the roads for 12 months.

Richard Cullen lost control of his vehicle and caused a five-car collision in Romsley, Worcestershire last year before climbing out of the wreckage and fleeing the scene.

At Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today, Mr Cullen was said to have admitted to careless driving, claiming that he had accidentally hit the accelerator as opposed to the brake.

The 50-year-old also reportedly admitted to failing to stop after the road accident, but claimed he had only done so due to ‘aggressive witnesses’. Mr Cullen was fined more than £10,000 and ordered to pay £185 costs as well as a £190 victim surcharge, BirminghamLive reported.

But it was said that Mr Cullen would ‘struggle quite significantly’, now having to take taxis and hire drivers during his driving ban.

The entrepreneur was quite dependent on driving especially for running his pest control businesses, it was said.

In his defence, Jason Aris explained: ‘He does not have an argument under exceptional hardship but he is going to have to employ drivers and utilise taxis and Ubers which are going to come at considerable expense to him. He is going to struggle quite significantly during work hours.’

Mr Aris also denied that Cullen was speeding beforehand, adding that ‘this is something that happened in the spur of the moment’.

During proceedings, a statement was also reportedly read out by one of the car owners who said the incident had a ‘large financial impact’ on them.

Another added: ‘We and especially our children need protection from such drivers.’

Home CCTV footage shows some of the cars – parked several metres apart on a residential street – collide with another in a split second as the Ferrari ploughs into them.

Prosecutor Alinah Iqbal said: ‘While in the vehicle on the Hagley Road for reasons not established he lost control causing it to veer across the road into the opposite carriageway. He failed to correct the deviation and subsequently collided on the front end with another vehicle.’

It is understood that District Judge Michelle Smith gave Mr Cullen a £10,069 fine with £185 ordered to be paid in costs and a £190 victim surcharge.
