President Joe Biden went after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in cutting remarks at a Florida fundraiser Tuesday for Democrat Charlie Crist, who is struggling in the polls against the potential Republican 2024 presidential candidate.
‘Charlie is running against Donald Trump incarnate. This guy doesn’t fit any of the categories I talked about. The way he deals, the way he denies,’ Biden said at an event to promote Crist in Golden Beach.
There is a developing political rivalry brewing between Trump and DeSantis, who could face off for the Republican nomination, particularly if DeSantis has a strong showing on Election Day in a week.
‘I always say democracy is on the ballot. I really mean it,’ Biden said, in his latest effort to put election integrity and January 6 at the forefront, at a time when polls show the majority of voters focusing on record inflation and the economy.
He tore into the way some Republicans have responded to the brutal hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, 82, inside his San Francisco home, by a suspect who police say was shouting ‘Where’s Nancy.’ David DePape was charged with attempted murder and other offenses in a California court Tuesday.

‘Look what happened. I’m talking [about Speaker] Nancy Pelosi. Look what happened? And look at the response of so-called responsible Republicans, making jokes about it,’ Biden said, without mentioning names.
Donald Trump Jr. is among those who jested about the attack, with a Halloween-themed tweet that picked up on a conspiracy theory.
Biden said his opponents were doing it because ‘there are a lot of unstable people in the population.’
‘The guy purchases a hammer to knee-cap’ the person second in the line of succession, and yet no one in the Republican Party leadership condemned it, he said.
He was referencing charging documents that DePape said he planned to hold Pelosi and break her kneecaps if she wouldn’t tell the ‘truth.’
‘If Nancy were to tell DePape the truth, he would let her go, and if she lied, he was going to break her kneecaps,’ according to a federal affidavit filed Monday.
Biden even took on a bizarre QAnon theory that describes Democrats as a cabal running child trafficking ring out of basements as part of efforts to ‘demonize’ opponents.
‘Look at the internet and see what’s being said and talk about you know, children in basements and all these kinds of things,’ he said.
DePape’s former boss, Frank Ciccarelli told the New York Times Tuesday, speaking about his former employee: ‘He really believed in the whole MAGA, “Pizzagate,” stolen election – you know, all of it, all the way down the line,’ he said.
‘These guys are extremely extreme,’ Biden continued, keeping at the Republicans in his remarks at the fundraiser. In fact leaders including Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) condemned the attack. Former President Trump condemned the attack, then quickly pivoted to bashing violent crime generally.
‘With Paul Pelosi, that’s a terrible thing, with all of them it’s a terrible thing,’ Trump told Americano Media, a Spanish language site on Friday. ‘Look at what’s happened to San Francisco generally. Look at what’s happening in Chicago,’ Trump continued.
‘It is really important that a state the size of Florida… comes down on the right side of history,’ Biden said.
The president said there hadn’t been such rejection of democracy since the Civil War. Perhaps to underscore the point, he was spotted carrying the new book by author Jon Meacham, who’s ‘Soul of America’ them undergirded Biden’s 2020 run.
Meacham’s new book, on Abraham Lincoln, And Then There Was Light, chronicles the 16thpresident’s battles against secession and threats to democracy.
Biden is facing headwinds in Florida. DeSantis leads Crist by 12 points in the RealClearPolitics polling average. But by visiting, Biden is laying down a marker in a state that will be critical in presidential politics, even if it has been drifting away from Democrats as a national battleground.

Trump is set to hit the campaign trail over the weekend in a last push for candidates he has backed before next Tuesday’s vote
