CNN commentator Van Jones slams Democrats for ‘threats to democracy’ warnings ahead of midterms

CNN commentator Van Jones said Democrats wasted their time stoking fear over the fate of democracy rather focusing on the economy.

Speaking on CNN Newsroom, Jones characterized Democrats’ repeated campaign trail claims that American democracy would be in jeopardy should Republicans win big in the midterms as ‘fools gold.’

His comments come as polls showed that the faltering state of the economy was voters’ top concern, before abortion rights, crime and immigration concerns.

Despite voters’ true concerns, Democrats have routinely characterized the upcoming race as a fundamental battle for the future of the United States.

Last week Biden said the election was a decision between ‘rule of law’ and ‘dark forces,’ while House Majority Whip James Clyburn compared the state of the union to 1930s Nazi Germany.

CNN Newsroom host Jim Sciutto asked Jones whether he felt Democrats had made a mistake by not focusing more on the economy while on the campaign trail.

‘In a cycle when that is the case, do the Democrats get their message wrong by focusing for instance on threats to democracy as opposed to economics as the top issue?’ he said.

Jones said he felt Democrats on a local level had done well discussing the economy, but that at the national level they had failed miserably.

‘I think there was this kind of fool’s gold, this idea that the threat to democracy is so severe in the wake of this insurrection and wake of these election deniers possibly grabbing control of the government, that that was something that you had to talk about,’ he said.

‘But you also have to talk about the economy. I think the tragedy here is that the Democrats have something to say on the economy.’

Jones then explained that he felt Democrats had ample opportunity to focus on Biden’s economic successes.

‘What Biden has done when it comes to 10 million jobs, what Biden has done in terms of prescription drug prices, standing up to China on the chips act.’

‘We didn’t focus enough firepower on that issue, and I think it is going to potentially cost us,’ he said.

In the lead up to the midterms, leading Democrats have continually characterized the upcoming election as a battle for the future of democracy, saying that if Republicans win big then fundamental American freedoms will begin to slip away.

On Monday night Nancy Pelosi told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that she felt democracy itself was ‘on the ballot’ in the midterms.

‘I do believe that our democracy is in danger because of what the others are saying about undermining our elections, even now as we go forward,’ she said.

And speaking to Fox over the weekend, Majority Whip Clyburn doubled down on his claims that he felt the United States was on the same footing as Germany in the 1930s as the Nazis rose to power.

‘I’ve studied history all of my life. I taught history. And I’m telling you, what I see here are parallels to what the history was in this world back in the 1930s in Germany,’ he said.

Last Wednesday, Biden delivered a rallying call to his supporters, describing the stakes in play in the midterm elections.

‘We, the people, must decide whether the rule of law will prevail or whether we’ll allow the dark forces to thirst – that thirst for power put ahead of the principles that have long guided us,’ he said.

Despite Democrats harping on the future of Democracy, a poll from the Washington Post and ABC found that voters consider the economy one of the most important factors at the ballot box for the midterm elections.

The poll gave Americans eight top issues they will be considering when making their decision.

The economy was cited by 26 percent of likely voters as one of the most important factors, followed by abortion with 22 percent and inflation and threats to democracy each by 21 percent.

Abortion, inflation and the future democracy were the next top issues for voters, according to the poll.
