Australia’s rental crisis: Bizarre reason ‘psychotic’ Sydney landlord evicted renter

A Sydney man has been left shocked after his ‘psychotic’ landlord evicted him after he had a few guests stay the night at his rental.

The man, Jack, is now facing homelessness after the owner of the granny flat he is renting gave him 30 days to move out.

She texted him at 9:30 am on Saturday morning after three friends stayed the night at his place after a night out.

‘Hi. Just to let you know that three freeloaders walked out of my private garden this morning. Like to explain to me?’ the landlord wrote.

After receiving no reply from her tenant, the landlord struck again, telling Jack he needed to move out within 30 days.

‘Hi, Jack. With much regret, I decided NOT to lease the granny flat out any further. Notice is now given to you to vacate the property within the legal period of 3 months or 13 weeks (or earlier) effective from 27 Feb to 26 May 2023,’ she said.

‘Good luck to you.’

Stunned, Jack asked if her decision had anything to do with his house guests.

‘What do you mean [free]loaders? My friends stayed over after a night out I’m allowed to do that. I can find other accommodation if necessary but does this have anything to do with yesterday?’ he replied.

Jack took to Reddit on Wednesday to ask if what she was doing was legal, adding that he had had ‘ongoing’ issues with having guests at the granny house.

He also revealed the landlord had upped his rent after noticing his girlfriend was staying over once a week at the property.

Reddit users were quick to sympathise with Jack, labelling the landlord a ‘Karen’ and a ‘control freak’ with a psychotic attitude.

Others wondered if he should just put up with it amid Sydney’s rental market crisis.

‘That’s ridiculous and so controlling. I wanna say you’re probably dodging a bullet, but also, the rental market is cutthroat, so good luck,’ one wrote.

‘You paid extra for your [girlfriend] to stay over WTF? Dude. No! She has been bleeding you dry because you have not yet stood up for yourself,’ another wrote.

‘Now is the perfect time to start. Stand up straight with your shoulders back.’

Another Reddit user said lease was covered by the rules of the NSW Residential Tenancies Act, which gave him protections.

Most advised Jack ‘not to pay another cent’ and move out in the next 30 days.

He agreed, adding that he assumed the bond he had paid was ‘dead and gone now’ as he had never dealt with a real estate agent and described the woman as ‘literally insane’.

Redditors said he was in his rights to ask for the bond, which his landlord can’t legally withhold unless she successfully claims it for damages.

Jack ended the thread by telling internet users he was going to ask for an extension on the 30 day notice he had been given.

The brutal eviction comes as hopeful tenants are finding it more difficult than ever to secure a property amid Sydney’s spiraling rental crisis.

The room is shared with another renter who also lives in a loft, though theirs boasts ‘it’s own coach and chill out space underneath’.
