Police in North Carolina are responding to a shooting in Raleigh, with initial unconfirmed reports suggesting five people have been killed – including a police officer.

One officer was shot and killed according to ABC 11, and a second officer also shot. Their condition is not immediately known.

Raleigh city council member Corey Branch told ABC 11 that he was aware that two officers had been shot but did not know exactly how many other victims there were.

One of the officers who was shot was off-duty and on their way to work when they encountered the armed suspect, the news channel reported.

They said the suspect was a white teenage male, armed with a long gun. 

The first reports began arriving just before 6pm local time.

‘The Raleigh Police Department is currently on the scene of an active shooting in the area of the Neuse River Greenway near Osprey Cove Drive and Bay Harbor Drive,’ the force tweeted. 

‘Residents in that area are advised to remain in their homes.’
