Aaron Carter‘s neighbors said they heard someone screaming, ‘he’s dead, he’s dead’ when a staff member found the former star unresponsive in a bathtub at his California home.

Cater, 34, the brother of famed pop icon and Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter, was found dead of what some of his friends suspect was a drug overdose, sources told The U.S. Sun.

One neighbor, a local photojournalist, told The U.S. Sun that he heard on his police scanner the call come in that there was an unresponsive male in the bathtub.

His wife, who is a nurse, rushed over to Carter’s home with her her AED [automated external defibrillator] and banged on the door, he said.

‘A woman answered the door and was screaming ‘he’s dead, he’s dead’ but wouldn’t let us in because she’d already called the cops,’ he said.

The neighbors later spoke to Carter’s devastated fiancée, Melanie Martin, who told them that the woman was the house-sitter and was kept for questioning while Martin herself ‘waited for hours’ for information from police.’

Representatives for Carter’s family confirmed the singer’s death. Martin, who was spotted outside his house breaking down in tears, asked for privacy as the family grieves.

Law enforcement said they received a 911 call at 11 a.m. on Saturday, saying ‘a male had drowned in the tub.’ They were contacted by a house sitter, who had found his body, the sheriff’s department told DailyMail.com.

Witnesses described a ‘chaotic’ scene at the singer’s house on Saturday, with police cars, news vans and people crowding in the streets to see what happened.

Carter’s photojournalist neighbor Tony Cheval, went into more detail about his nurse wife who encountered the screaming woman at his door.

‘A woman answered the door and was screaming ‘he’s dead, he’s dead’ but wouldn’t let us in because she’d already called the cops.

‘I spoke to Melanie afterward and she said it was his maid, and questioned why she wouldn’t let us in.

‘Melanie drove up from Orange County, she was distraught.’

Another witness said The U.S. Sun that Carter’s house-sitter looked ‘shaken’ and spoke to police inside before being escorted out with belongings in bags.

The witness added: ‘The house-sitter was the only person behind the police tape for a long.’

‘Melanie had to wait hours before police would even tell her anything, and she was desperate to see their many pet dogs still in the house.’

Homicide detectives were dispatched to the scene, but there is no information or evidence of foul play at this time. Emergency services have been spotted outside Carter’s Lancaster home, which has been cordoned off with police tape.

A coroner was seen removing Carter’s body from the home later Saturday.

In the embattled rapper’s last performance before his untimely death he can be heard singing that ‘he’ll be gone but it’s not for long’.

The video was posted to Instagram just a day before the shock announcement.

A close friend of Carter’s told The U.S. Sun that they believe he did not commit suicide and that he had been planning studio sessions with artists the following week for an album.

Carter had also told the friend that he was ‘excited’ to showcase new music and work with artists, who were traveling to Los Angeles specifically for a duet.

‘Any suggestion he was suicidal last night when he was in contact with his friends and team is wrong,’ the friend said. ‘Hearing the news this morning was absolutely devastating.’

The friend added that Carter had a good heart, was a talented artist and wanted to show the world that he was a ‘great father and continue strongly with his music career.’

He also added: ‘Aaron was always adamant he took medication and pills that were prescribed by doctors.

‘He would swear blind he did not take narcotics like cocaine.’

The 34-year-old notably battled addiction for many years, facing legal troubles and entering rehabilitation while continuing with his music career, according to E!.

In 2019, he revealed on ‘The Doctors’ that he was diagnosed with ‘multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety and manic depression,’ according to CNN.

The troubled celebrity is survived by his son Prince.

Prince’s mother and on-again-off-again girlfriend, Melanie Martin, posted to Tik Tok crying just minutes after the announcement.

Martin can be seen driving while crying into the camera which is filming the short video.

She released a statement later Saturday: ‘My fiancé Aaron Carter has passed away. I love Aaron with all my heart and it’s going to be a journey to raise a son without a father. Please respect the privacy of my family as we come to terms with the loss of someone we love greatly. We are still in the process of accepting this unfortunate reality. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.’

Tributes began pouring in for the former star.

Hilary Duff, who famously dated Carter in the early 2000s, paid tribute to her ex-boyfriend in a touching Instagram post Saturday evening following the shocking announcement of the singer and actor’s death.

‘For Aaron – I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent… boy did my teenage self love you dearly. Sending love to your family at this time. Rest easy.’

Carter and Duff dated on and off between 2001 and 2003, when they were barely teenagers. Carter even appeared in an episode of Duff’s famous Disney Channel sitcom, Lizzie McGuire.

They were involved in a tumultuous romance, with Aaron also alleged to be dating Lindsay Lohan at the same time.

This led to a reported feud between the two actresses. In 2003, the young couple broke up for good over rumors that Aaron cheated on the Lizzie McGuire star.

Several other celebrities joined with Duff in tribute to the late singer.

New Kids on the Block released a statement on their Instagram to honor the singer.

The band wrote, ‘We are shocked and saddened about the sudden passing of Aaron Carter. Sending prayers to the Carter family. Rest in peace, Aaron.’

Courtney Stodden also shared a tribute to Aaron on her Instagram writing, ‘He called me, confided but I stepped away due to threats by surrounding people. I hoped he’d heal but now he’s at peace … I’m so gutted #ripaaroncarter #rip #tooyoung.’

Carter has two sisters, one of which is his twin, Angel and Leslie, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 25 from a drug overdose.

Carter was pulled over on suspicion of DUI on Tuesday last week, after his on-off girlfriend Melanie Martin ‘called the police’ – with the embattled singer later cleared of any wrongdoing.

TMZ reported that the ‘I Want Candy’ hitmaker was driving an RV in Antelope Valley around 10:45 a.m. when police got a call about a driver possibly driving under the influence and weaving through traffic.

Officers conducted field sobriety tests on the star and found him to be not under the influence. In a bizarre turn, he later locked his keys inside the RV with photos showing the singer getting into the vehicle via the roof hatch to retrieve them.

Carter has since spoken out  against being portrayed as a washed-up drug addict despite turning his life around for the better and marking five years sober.

In August, the former teen heartthrob revealed his fury about his problematic public image in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, saying he believes his recovery has been ignored and that he should no longer be viewed as a ‘train wreck’.

‘I realized that I was killing myself and everything was being destroyed around me from it,’ Carter told DailyMail.com.

‘I was lying to the world and myself. Everybody deserves a second chance. I have not committed any crazy crimes.

‘I am not how some people try to paint me. If somebody wants to call me a train wreck, well I’ve been a train that’s been wrecked multiple times and derailed by many different things.

‘But I rebuild, get on the tracks and keep going.’

He added that knowing there are ‘so many reasons to be here, to live,’ keeps him motivated in fighting his addiction.

Carter said he got hooked on ‘huffing’ and ‘dusting’, a form of inhalant abuse involving canned aerosol chemicals, which the American Addiction Centers (AAC) say causes ‘an immediate rush of euphoria as well as possible hallucinations and delusions.’

Carter admitted his use was so severe he suffered seizures.

AAC experts warn excessive huffing can lead to ‘sudden sniffing death’ by causing fatal heart failure – even the first time it is tried.

In 2019 Carter appeared on TV series The Doctors where a urine test came back positive for marijuana, ‘extended opiates’ and benzodiazepine – which he was taking to treat his multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia and acute anxiety.

In August, Carter insisted that he had no opiate issues, had quit smoking weed, and was not an excessive alcohol drinker.

The singer has previously revealed his sister Leslie, who died from an overdose in 2012, was the one who introduced him to huffing.

Despite his battles with substance abuse and legal troubles documented in the media over the years, Carter is adamant that he is ‘not a victim, but a soldier’, and admits he resents his public image as a troubled former star.

The singer also shared revelations about his complicated relationship with his family, including his older brother, former Backstreet Boys star Nick.

Carter claims their years of estrangement was caused by them ‘infantilizing’ him.

‘One of the things I tell them is stop worrying about me. Worry about yourself.

‘If somebody, who is in recovery, makes the decision to relapse you cannot stop them.

‘I am closer to 40 than 20. Enough is enough.

‘My sister Angel is always: ‘I am so worried’. But are you? If you were worried you would show up to my house.

‘I told them ‘you cannot infantilize me. You cannot treat me like a little child and baby.’

‘There were times when my three sisters, when I turned 18 and got millions of dollars, were hanging out with me, because I had the money,’ he said. ‘Then when I go broke and lose it all, where are they?

‘That upsets me a lot.’

But Carter added at the time that he was ‘absolutely’ hopeful for resolution.

‘It takes two to tango. I have reached out many times and they treat me the way that Michael Jackson’s brothers treated him. It’s sad.

‘It is like I’m appreciated more when I am failing than when I’m succeeding.

‘I am a father. I am a success story. And I am going to continue to be that whether anyone chooses to see it or not. If they don’t then I am going to shove it in your face, because I am a good person to look at as an inspiration on how to keep pushing on and never giving up.

‘I am never going to stop doing this.’

Carter opened for the Backstreet Boys tour in 1997 — the same year his gold-selling debut self-titled album released. He reached triple-platinum status with his sophomore album, 2000′s ‘Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),’ which produced hit singles including the title song and ‘I Want Candy.’ His videos received regular airplay on Disney and Nickelodeon.

The singer earned acting credits through his appearance on television shows including ‘Lizzie McGuire.’ He starred alongside his brother, Nick, and their siblings B.J., Leslie and Angel Carter on the E! unscripted series ‘House of Carters’ in 2006.

Carter made his Broadway debut in 2001 as JoJo in the musical ‘Seussical.’ In 2009, he appeared on the ABC competition show ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ finishing in fifth place with partner Karina Smirnoff. He was featured on the Food Network cooking show ‘Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off’ in 2012.

In 2017, Carter opened up about his substance abuse on an episode of ‘The Doctors.’ He was in rehab that same year after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana charges. He checked himself in for treatment on a few occasions in an effort to regain custody of his son Prince.

Carter’s fifth and final studio album, ‘LOVE,’ was released in 2018.
