Drivers furious over ‘insane’ warning note on Melbourne car’s rear windscreen

A driver’s handwritten warning to other vehicles that they ‘drive slow’ has left motorists divided over whether it’s a considerate gesture or an indication they shouldn’t be on the road.

A Melbourne driver snapped a photo of a note pasted to the rear windscreen of a car on Wednesday which appears to read: ‘I drive is slow, kindly overtake.’

Some people read the sign as: ‘If drive is slow, kindly overtake.’ 

The driver shared the note on Reddit, noting that they ‘appreciate the heads up’ – but others commenters under the post were less than impressed.

Hundreds of commenters slammed the driver for being aware they’re travelling at a ‘dangerous’ speed but refusing to hurry up.

‘It’s good to be aware but if you need a sign like this you shouldn’t be driving on the roads,’ one person said.

‘Driving significantly below the speed limit is dangerous just like driving over the speed limit is – nobody should be going that far under the limit that they need a sign like this on the back of their car,’ another person posted.

‘It’s more annoying than speeders. The recommended speed limit is exactly that. It’s not good for traffic flow to be going 20km/h slower than recommended,’ one person commented.

A fourth person said: ‘If anyone drives so slowly consistently enough to need this sign then they really shouldn’t be driving. They are putting themselves and other road users at risk.’

However, several other commenters read the note as ‘if drive is slow, kindly overtake’ and listed several reasons why the driver might be travelling under the speed limit. 

Commenters (above) were divided over whether the driver was thoughtful for letting other motorists know they’re slow or ‘dangerous’ for driving below the speed limit

‘(The driver) may occasionally be transporting fragile cargo that requires slower speeds,’ one commenter wrote.

‘Only answer I have is if they’re on a spare. Once I blew a tire an hour from home and had to drive 80km/h down the highway,’ another said.

‘They’re probably just sick of people bearing down on them because they’re off by five kilometres or so,’ a third person wrote.

‘We’re all just making an assumption that the driver is well below the speed limit. Maybe the driver is just sick of being tailgated by bogans,’ another commented. 

A fifth person wrote: ‘Fast people, if you can get around someone, do it. S*** only escalates when you’re needlessly up someone’s a** – they get angry, you get angry, they double down, you start making mistakes and nothing at all good happens.’
