ABC slammed for ‘woke’ coverage of Sydney’s 9pm New Year’s Eve fireworks and accused of ‘excluding the majority’ of viewers: ‘What an absolute disgrace’
The ABC’s live New Year’s Eve coverage has been slammed by viewers who branded the show ‘woke‘ and ‘a disgrace’.Â
The show included singer Casey Donovan covering 2 Be Loved (Am I Ready) by Lizzo and a a segment on Indigenous artists Carmen Glynn-Braun and Dennis Golding, who created of this year’s 9pm Calling Country fireworks display.Â
The pair centered the show around themes of land and sea, and also designed the projections on the Harbour Bridge pylons.Â

Dami Im also took to the stage for a tribute to Olivia Newton-John who died this year, while duo Vika & Linda performed songs by The Seekers to honour the late Judith Durham, who passed away earlier in 2022.Â
Drag Queen Courtney act performed songs by Olivia Newton-John and the Divinyls.Â
Not everyone watching was happy with the variety show on offer, with some sharing their anger on Twitter.Â
‘What an absolutely boring 9pm display with absolutely boring, unknown ‘music’ and with what is supposed to be a celebration for all, being hijacked by a woke minority’ complained one person.Â

Another person wrote: ‘Looks like @ABCTV #SydneyNYE is trying to appeal to a younger audience this year but they don’t seem to understand young people don’t stay at home on #NYE watching the #ABC’.  Â
‘#SydneyNYE could they have missed the mark more with the kids fireworks music selection?’ someone else said.

‘I’m sure many kids are saying WTF was that. It’s really not that hard – just get Bluey to sing baby shark then run TikTok vids. Save the obligatory woke snooze fest for the adults’ fireworks’ they added.  Â
‘The @ABCTV is a national woke EMBARRASSMENT’ said someone else, while one more chimed in: ‘So woke’.
‘Enough woke s**t for now. Mute…’ wrote another person watching at home.Â
Others loved the show, with one fan writing: ‘Is #NewYearsEve complete without @CaseyDonovan I think not!’
‘ABC definitely be doing the go woke or go broke’ someone else agreed.Â
‘People think taxpayers money is wasted on NYE fireworks. Then #ABCNYE takes that money down the toilet to a whole new level’ one person tweeted.Â
