NSW ambulance chief superintendent Mark Gibbs praised first responders for their work under confronting conditions.
‘The baby had sustained burns to between 80 per cent and 90 per cent of its body,’ he said.
‘Any incident involving a child, particularly a very young baby, is heartbreaking, but I’d like to commend our crews for doing an exemplary job under very difficult circumstances.’
He added support services were offered to those first on the scene.
Neighbours in the area told reporters the baby’s mother was heard shrieking.
Amber Knapp who lives in the same street told The Daily Telegraph she was looking after her own child when she went outside and caught sight of the smoke.
‘The entire situation is devastating, my heart really goes out to the family,’ she said.
Police and fire crews are investigating the cause of the blaze and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
