Amid a flurry of shakeups at DC Studios involving multiple superhero projects, Zachary Levi is debunking rumors he’s being re-cast as Shazam.

The 42-year-old actor played the title hero in the 2019 superhero adventure Shazam, a role he reprises in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, in theaters March 17, 2023.

While new DC Films head James Gunn has, over the past few weeks, canceled Wonder Woman 3, fired Henry Cavill as Superman and rejected a sequel to Black Adam (for now), Levi took to Twitter to debunk rumors he’ll be recast as Shazam.

There have been no concrete reports regarding the future of Shazam, though rumors have swirled that he’ll be re-cast, as the future of DC is re-shaped by Gunn and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran.

A fan dubbed Ashlinski (@bellatrixkale23) quote retweeted an unsubstantiated tweet from @ComicBookMari claiming, ‘I’m so angry that Zachary Levi isn’t gonna be Shazam anymore he was the perfect casting choice and to add more salt to the wound he is close friends with James Gunn.’

Ash added, ‘I want this not to be true because his Shazam is he ONE thing in the DCEU I would absolutely throw hands for to protect. @ZacharyLevi is perfection.’

Levi quote-retweeted her quote-retweet, adding, ‘Oooh, I really wouldn’t go believing everything you see on the internet. I’m Gucci, Ash. We all Gucci.’

He also quote-retweeted another tweet suggesting that Gunn will recast younger actors, calling 42-year-old Levi a ‘grandpa’ as Levi responded, ‘Ageist’ with a smirking emoji.

If any upcoming film project is ‘safe’ it’s probably Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which comes out in less than three months, though a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter speculated Gunn and Safran could just opt for a fresh start for all of DC.

Still, that has not been confirmed and Gunn himself said of that particular report, ‘some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.’

Levi’s first foray into the DC Extended Universe was 2019’s Shazam, based on the DC Comics character created in 1940 by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck.

The story follows young Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who finds new superpowers that turns him into an adult superhero (Levi) when he simply says the word ‘Shazam.’
