England and US soccer fans have engaged in a battle of words on social media over who gets to keep James Corden after both teams settled for a 0-0 draw in Qatar on Friday.
That’s three times and counting that the teams have met on soccer’s biggest stage and England is still waiting for its first win against the Americans at a competitive tournament.
Coach Gareth Southgate had reminded his players of that record beforehand, with the US famously winning 1-0 in 1950 and playing out a 1-1 draw in 2010. They didn’t seem to heed his warning and didn’t respond to Gregg Berhalter’s young and energetic team.
England beat Iran 6-2 in its opening game in Qatar to justify its status as one of the tournament favorites. But it could consider itself fortunate not to have dropped another match to the US, after Christian Pulisic hit the crossbar with a first-half strike and Weston McKinnie lifted a shot over from eight yards out.
Before the clash, soccer fans had joked that the loser of the game had to keep ‘Late Late Night Show’ host Corden.
‘We deserve James Corden after that performance,’ tweeted KFC UK after Friday’s clash.
Prior to Friday’s 0-0 draw, sets of fans from the US and England claimed that the loser would have to keep James Corden within its borders. Fans, however, don’t know what to do with the inconclusive result
KFC UK did not hold back in its assessment of England’s players’ performance against the US
‘The 0-0 draw means that under the rules James Corden has to be left in the middle of the Atlantic in a dinghy. #ENGUSA,’ an England fan wrote.
‘As a result of the draw between England and USA, James Corden has been set adrift in a wood barrel on the Atlantic,’ a USMNT supporter shared.
Another added: ‘Sadly that draw means that James Corden will spend 6 months in each country per year, the worst of all possible results.’
One fan found the ultimate solution to Friday’s inconclusive outcome, suggesting that Corden should ‘be blasted into space.’
‘Nobody gets him, the world will heal,’ he added.
Fans from both countries have come up with some brilliant ideas after Friday’s goalless tie
Reflecting on the goalless draw and its significance, another fan tweeted: ‘If we learned anything today, it’s that nobody wants James Corden.’
‘Let’s just give France James Corden, then everyone’s a winner,’ English journalist, Alex Tiffin, shared.
‘Since England and the USA tied, the only fair compromise is for James Corden to be put in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean,’ an American fan wrote.
One fan suggested to give Corden away to France, while others questioned whether Friday’s result was deliberate in not settling the debate surrounding the actor’s residential status
‘I’m sure USA and England arranged a draw so nobody had to keep James Corden,’ one skeptical fan said.
‘At least we now have an excuse to cut James Corden in half,’ another fan tweeted.
‘So, who gets James Corden,’ ex-Premier League commentator, Arlo White, said following the scoreless tie.
Friday’s draw for both teams sets up a match for the U.S. against Iran on Tuesday for a spot in the round of 16. Iran beat Wales 2-0 earlier and sits second in Group B with three points, one more than the Americans.
England will only need to either draw or win against Wales to advance to the World Cup’s knockout stage.
