Passenger asks train station staff to check on ‘unwell man’ fearing he’d frozen to death – before hilarious truth is revealed

  • Emma Obank was on a train passing through Woking, Surrey, when she spotted the figure
  • South Western Railway responded to her tweet and told her that it was a statue

A concerned female passenger’s tweet has gone viral after she asked train station staff members to check on a man who looked as though he had ‘frozen to death’, only to be told that it was a statue.

Emma Obank, an agent working in TV and film, was on a train passing through Woking railway station in Surrey when she spotted what she thought was a man sat on a bench looking unwell and covered in snow.

Emma contacted South Western Railway on Twitter and asked them to check if he was all right.

Emma wrote: ‘Hi, I’ve just been on the train passing through Woking. It looked like there was a man very unwell on Platform 1 on a bench. Can station staff check he’s ok?’

The rail company replied asking whereabouts on the platform he was and Emma told them that the figure was seated under a canopy.

South Western Railway wrote: ‘That’s ok Emma. He is a permanent fixture on the station – he is one of a series of sculptures in the town.’

Emma replied: ‘Oh thank god! It was covered in snow so I thought someone had frozen to death!’

Twitter users were quick to comment on the exchange.

One person posted: ‘This must be the funniest thing I have seen online today.’

Another wrote: ‘He does look unwell to be fair.’

The incident took place in March 2018, but the tweet is still getting a positive response after Emma reposted it on the anniversary of the event.

Earlier this week, Emma tweeted: ‘5 years since this mad moment it never gets old’.

Commentators described the interaction as ‘golden’ and reassured her that it’s an easy mistake to make because the statue looks very realistic.

A South Western Railway spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that Seated Man is still okay, but we are glad that our customers are keen to look out for one another.’
