A car has lost control and slammed into a tree before erupting into flames following an alleged police chase on Sydney‘s lower north shore.
Emergency services remain at the scene of the horror crash in Cammeray on Sydney’s lower north shore on Sunday afternoon, with a number of occupants in the allegedly stolen vehicle rushed to hospital.
The crash caused lengthy traffic delays on the Sydney Harbour Bridge while rescue helicopters interrupted a local cricket game when they landed in the middle of nearby Bon Andrews Oval.
Shocked witnesses recalled seeing the maroon car screaming through the quiet suburban backstreets being chased by police at speeds of up to 150km/h.
The pursuit ended when the car smashed into a tree on West St opposite St Thomas Rest Park, a popular off leash dog park.

Several young occupants inside the vehicle had to be freed from the wreckage before being rushed to hospital
 ‘I looked out my window and saw the car racing past at very high speed, ’ said one woman.
 ’There were five males inside.
‘I could hear them being chased by police through the streets for ages afterwards. You could hear the V8 engine being thrashed. It was incredibly dangerous.’
Police and witnesses were forced to smash through the windows to pull occupants trapped in the wreckage to safety before being rushed to hospital.Â
At least five people suffered injuries, including three with serious head injuries.Â
They have been taken to Royal North Shore and Royal Prince Alfred hospitals.
The occupants in the car were all aged in their late teens and early 20s.

There are also reports several pedestrians were caught up in the chaos.
‘There was a woman on the side of the road, there was blood everywhere,’ one witness told Ten News.
‘The car caught fire and there was a loud bang as the car blew up.’Â
