The average cost of renting a property in Britain is putting huge pressure on tenants, and is currently standing at an eye-watering £1,172 a month.

In some places, that amount of money will enable you to rent a four-bedroom detached house, but in others, it may only stretch to a room in a flat share.

When London is excluded the average rent in Britain is £977 a month, according to the latest figures from HomeLet.

Rental values tend to be higher in London, where there is higher demand and a lack of supply.

The average cost of renting in the capital is £1,989 a month, with values in London and around the country expected to continue rising throughout this year.

Andy Halstead, of HomeLet, said: The cost of living crisis is showing few signs of abating anytime soon, with tenants facing rising costs across all areas of their lives.

‘The increasing pressure on tenants looks likely to have a knock on effect – tenants facing difficulties paying rent could see landlords choosing to exit the market altogether, leading to a spiral that exacerbates the shortage of rental properties and further drives prices upwards.’

Daniel Copley, of property website Zoopla, said: “Although rents have increased by 12 per cent in the past year at a UK level – this varies significantly depending on where in the country you’re looking for a home to rent.”
