Vera’s replacement confirmed as ITV fills the series’ slot with another detective drama following season finale

Vera’s replacement has been confirmed as ITV filled the series slot with another popular detective drama to ensure fans get their mystery fix. 

The channel will now air Endeavour in its 8PM slot, with the ninth and final series of the Inspector Morse prequel hitting screens this weekend. 

The dramatic TV show, which is set in the 1960s, follows the adventures of a young Endeavour Morse after he transfers to the Oxford City Police following a double-murder investigation. 

Starring Shaun Evans as the titular character, a younger incarnation of the legendary Inspector Morse, and Roger Allam as veteran Detective Inspector Fred Thursday. 

Vera, which stars Brenda Blethyn as the lead character, aired its season finale last week, with the the leading lady forced to face secrets from her past. 

The two hour special, The Darkest Evening, saw Vera Stanhope discover an abandoned car with a toddler in it. 

When a huge storm hits, the detective is forced to take the baby to a nearby stately home of her estranged family, Brockburn House. 

Vera does not receive a warm welcome from her family members and things soon take an ever darker turn when a body is found nearby. 

Meanwhile, ITV have announced that Endeavour will be coming to an end after 10 years, with this years ninth season set to be its last.

Stars of the show Shaun Evans and Roger Allam along with screenwriter Russell Lewis mutually decided it was time for the much-loved TV series to come to an end 

The new comes after Brenda has revealed the toll filming Vera 300 miles away from home has on her and admitted she’s unsure if she can ‘do it anymore’. 

The actress, 76, who has played DCI Stanhope for 13 years, added ‘never say never’ about filming another series. 

Vera is one of ITV‘s highest-rated shows and become a worldwide sensation, watched in more than 20 countries.

Brenda lives in Kent, more than 300 miles away from where the drama is filmed, with husband Michael Mayhew and their cockapoo, Jack.

She told The Mirror: ‘When we finish filming, I always say, ‘I really don’t think I can do this anymore,’

‘Filming usually means six months away from home – and in 2022 it was the best part of 10 months. But then I have a rest, get my appetite back and change my mind.’

Speaking about her co-stars, she added: ‘The emotional feeling comes in – thinking of all of the other people who are still there, who do want to do more.’
