Bus driver is arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after pedestrian, 20, is hit and killed – as police appeal for witnesses

A bus driver has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, after a 20-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by the vehicle. 

The pedestrian, named locally as Josh Highley, was struck as he walked along Burnley Road in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, on Friday (June 3).

Josh, from the Lee Mount area of Halifax, West Yorkshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver was held on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed limit for drugs.

Friends and family paid tribute to Josh on social media after his death.

A floral tribute to Josh was laid on Burnley Road where Josh was killed, with a picture on Instagram captioned: ‘I have left flowers for you boy. Josh Highley, fly high beautiful’

One wrote Facebook: ‘RIP mate. No one deserves to go so young. 

‘Thoughts go out to you and your family.’

Another friend said: ‘We love and miss you Josh’ while a third added, ‘I am gutted, heartbroken. So going to miss you lad.’

The man’s mother, Christina Jones, a mother-of-two, told Yorkshire Live her son was ‘very well known’ in the area and would be greatly missed.

Ms Jones is being supported by a police liaison officer.

Police said the driver has since been released under investigation and they have appealed for witnesses.

Anyone who has dashcam footage of the incident is also being urged to get in touch

The coroner has been passed the file and an inquest will be opened in due course to establish the circumstances of Josh’s death.
