Tom Hanks has hit back at claims his children were beneficiaries of nepotism as he insisted they all were merely entering the ‘family business’.
Speaking with Reuters via The Sun, Hanks drew comparisons to small businesses run by families where everyone in the household was expected to contribute.
His defense came amid the recent ‘nepo babies’ uproar surrounding the offspring of Hollywood stars who have found fame with a leg up from their famous parents.

Hanks, whose son Truman appears in his latest film A Man Called Otto, told the outlet: ‘Look, this is a family business. This is what we’ve been doing forever.
‘It’s what all of our kids grew up in. We have four kids, they are all very creative, they are all involved in some brand of storytelling, and if we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year.’
‘The thing that doesn’t change no matter what happens, no matter what your last name is, is whether it works or not,’ he said. ‘That’s the issue anytime any of us go off and try to tell a fresh story or create something that has a beginning and a middle and an end.’
Hanks also stressed his children could not credit their success to their last names, which ultimately fell on the quality of their product.

‘Doesn’t matter what our last names are. We have to do the work in order to make that a true and authentic experience for the audience and that’s a much bigger task than worrying about whether anyone’s going to try and scathe us or not.’

With his ex-wife Samantha Lewes, he has daughter Elizabeth, 40, who appeared in several of her father’s films, and son Colin, 45, who has enjoyed considerable success with numerous titles under his belt.
Chet Hanks and his brother Truman Hanks, whose mother is Hanks’ second wife Rita Wilson, have also gone into showbusiness.

Tom previously revealed he told Truman not to rely on his famous last name when working on the movie.

‘Truman plays my character’s younger self, but he’s not the actor in the family – he’s an artist and is going to be a cinematographer,’ Hanks said on The Graham Norton Show.
‘We talked about it a lot and it was all his choice, but I said to him, ‘No matter what your last name is, you are going to have to hit the marks.’ Not everyone is cut out for that, but he did a magnificent job and I thought he was extraordinary.’
The term nepo babies was coined online and is used to describe celebrity offspring who land easily in the world of showbiz, cushioned by their parents’ famous names.
Lily-Rose Depp, Maude Apatow, and a slew of others were among those plastered on the front cover of New York Magazine’s The Year of the Nepo Baby cover.
The furore-causing article was published in December and featured other children of the rich and famous who lucked out in the genetic lottery.
Celebrity nepotism is nothing new but the insult ‘nepo baby’ has become increasingly popular as shorthand to deride it.
