Tom Brady addresses divorce from Gisele Bundchen on first podcast since announcement

Tom Brady has spoken about his divorce from wife Gisele Bundchen on his first podcast since the couple confirmed the end of their marriage.

The 45-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, who also opened up on the underperforming team, and the supermodel announced their divorce last Friday following weeks of speculation.

And Brady, whose NFL team is struggling this season, admitted the situation is ‘very amicable’ amid reports ‘he really tried to fix their marriage’.

‘I think there’s a lot of professionals in life that go through things that they deal with at work and they deal with at home,’ he said on the SiriusXM podcast Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray.

‘Obviously the good news is it’s a very amicable situation and I’m really focused on two things, taking care of my family and certainly my children and, secondly, doing the best job I can to win football games. 

‘So that’s what professionals do. You focus at work when it’s time to work, and then when you come home you focus on the priorities that are at home. All you can do is the best you could do.

The couple are expected to share custody of their two children, Vivian and Benjamin. Tom also has a third son from a previous relationship. They are shown in February 2022, after he announced he was retiring. Gisele embraced the decision – but he walked back on it a month later

‘That’s what I’ll just continue to do as long as I’m working and as long as I’m being a dad.’

Before his divorce from Bundchen, Brady was ‘really trying to fix’ their marriage, a source told People.

It was ‘too little, too late’ a person close to the football player and supermodel, 42, told the outlet.

The update comes as the mother-of-two is reportedly ‘doing fine’ following the announcement of their split.

The source added that the sports star ‘was trying to make things work, and to make things right.’

‘But at that point, it was a little bit too little, too late,’ the person divulged. ‘She gave him a lot of opportunities to fix things, and he didn’t.’

Gray pressed Brady further on his split in the weekly podcast, asking: ‘Is there a challenge compartmentalizing between the two?’

‘Well, I think that’s what being a professional is. I’ve dealt with a lot of challenging situations on and off the field over 23 years, and a lot of it does play out in front of a lot of people,’ the quarterback replied.

‘So it’s, I think the interesting thing for a football player, or an athlete in general, is, you know, you’re out there, I always say we’re not actors. Even though we’re on TV, you know, that is our real self out there. We’re trying to do our best. That’s how people really have gotten to know me over the years, by being on TV.

Brady and Bundchen confirmed their divorce in Instagram statements on Friday. She said her priority had ‘always been’ the children, but said the pair had ‘grown apart’. In his statement, Brady said the decision was ‘painful and difficult’ 

Tom and Gisele married in 2009 first in a quiet ceremony in Santa Monica, Calif., and then in Costa Rica surrounded by friends and family. She was a Victoria’s Secret bombshell and he was a star player for the New England Patriots 

‘And that is an authentic self that’s out there to compete with my teammates every day. And you’re giving all you can to the team and, you know, everyone’s going through different things. We all have our unique challenges in life. We’re all humans.

‘We do the best we could do. I have incredible parents that have always taught me the right way to do things. I want to be a great father to my children and always try to do things the right way as well.

‘And to deal with things in your life that have challenges, you wanna deal with them in the best possible way. So I want to always be able to hold my head high on and off the field, and I’m gonna try to continue to do that for as long as I’m here.’

Brady announced that he was retiring from the NFL in February, only to turn around a few weeks later and U-turn on the decision.

Many believed that Brady re-entering the NFL became a bone of contention for Bundchen. A source confirmed to DailyMail.com in late-September that their physical separation was not impacted by Brady’s move to rejoin his beloved sport.

On Friday Brady and Bundchen announced their divorce. The Bucs star said it had been a ‘difficult’ and ‘painful’ decision that the pair reached after ‘much consideration’.

Gisele, 42, said: ‘To end a marriage is never easy… we have grown apart.’ She said she ‘wishes the best’ for Brady but confirmed the pair had ‘grown apart’.

‘I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always,’ she said.

Both said they would continue to co-parent their two children together.’ The couple are expected to share custody of their two children, Vivian, nine and Benjamin, 12. Tom also has a third son, 15-year-old son Jack with ex Bridget Moynahan.

‘I’m glad it’s unfamiliar. I want this to be as unfamiliar as possible. Losing sucks and we’ve put a lot into winning, just like every team does. And no one’s feeling sorry for the Bucs,’ he added on the same podcast.

‘We know that and we gotta go change it. So I think the attitude is, there’s no surrender. There’s nobody that’s backing down from the challenge. We’ve faced adversity before. We all have. You face adversity in your professional life. You face adversity in other aspects of life. It all builds resilience and you learn how to deal with the adversities and hopefully they make you stronger. 

‘So we’re gonna go out there this week and we’re gonna try to be the best we could be this week. Who cares what happened in the past eight weeks? 

‘Our record is what it is. We’re not changing it. We can’t change any game that we’ve had. All we can do is learn from the last eight weeks and try to apply it in a winning way this week. 

‘And, you know, it’s a big challenge for us. So we’re gonna see what we were made of. And I think time will tell all.’ 

The Bucs welcome the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
