Manhunt underway for three inmates who broke out of prison as police warn frightened locals: ‘do not approach’

A major manhunt is underway for three prisoners who escaped the Townsville Correctional Centre’s prison farm in North Queensland on Monday night. 

The male inmates vanished from the low-security jail between 6.30pm and 7.30pm but Queensland Corrective Services do not know which direction they headed – or how they busted out.

Police have have set up road blocks in surrounding areas between the Bruce Highway and Southwood Rd warning members of the public ‘do not approach’ as two of the are serving time for violent crimes.

Preston Donald Zane Quakawoot was locked up for assaulting a police office and was sentenced to nine months.

The third in the trio, Layne Rex Newman, was jailed for break-ins without violence or threats and is serving a year and three months.

Townsville Correctional Centre is a complex prison which houses high and low security male and female populations.

The facility also includes a farm that some inmates can work on as part of their rehabilitation.  

Anyone with any information on the men’s whereabouts is urged to keep their distance and call police immediately.
