The Last of Us fans spot an embarrassing error in the new episode

HBO’s The Last of Us is already a huge hit, renewed for a second season and earning rave reviews from fans and critics alike… though an eagle-eyed fan spotted an embarrassing error in Sunday night’s new episode.

The new episode – entitled Kin – followed Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they continue West on their journey, as Joel reunites with his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna).

While the episode was well-received, one TikTok user spotted a number of crew members seen visibly in a shot.

The gaffe was fairly reminiscent of a well-publicized error in another huge HBO show – Game of Thrones – when a Starbucks cup was spotted on a table near Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

The error was first spotted by TikTok user @domineo32, who played back a scene where Joel and Ellie were walking over a snow-covered bridge… but when he zoomed in on a particular aerial shot, a number of people who were presumably crew members were spotted at the edge of the shot.

The TikTok user paused the aerial shot, filmed hundreds if not thousands of feet above the bridge with a helicopter or a drone, and when he zoomed in on two particular areas.

There were crew members spotted at the end of the path before the bridge, and more were spotted on another path just south of the bridge.

A Twitter user dubbed @stjguitarist shared a screengrab from that video in a response to a tweet sent by The Last of Us video game creator Neil Druckmann.

Druckmann was laughing off rumors that a character from the second game, Dina, was seen in last week’s episode in his original tweet, though Druckmann has not yet responded to @stjguitarist’s tweet.

‘Brilliant episode. Something you might want to fix and reupload though. You can see the film crew in this shot,’ @stjguitarist said in his first tweet.

He also poked fun at the Game of Thrones Starbucks gaffe in a second tweet, placing two large Starbucks cup graphics near where the crew members are seen.

‘So it’s clear, in case anyone can’t see it. I highlighted the areas where the crew is standing. With a little humor,’ he added.

He clarified, ‘Also, I LOVE both the game and the series. I’m not simply pointing out mistakes. But I’m sure they’d want to fix it.’

When the now-infamous Starbucks gaffe happened, HBO ultimately acknowledged the mistake with a humorous statement.

‘The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea,’ the network said, before ultimately scrubbing the cup from the episode on HBO Max, though the massive amounts of GIFs and memes still live on.

Whether or not HBO responds to the mistake with the same humor, or if they will digitally alter the episode, remains to be seen.

The Last of Us is based on the video game created by Neil Druckmann, which debuted for the PlayStation 3 in 2013 and became one of the best-selling video games of all time.

The story is set in the aftermath of a worldwide plague after the mutated cordyceps fungus decimated humanity.

The show follows Joel, who is tasked with taking Ellie – who is somehow immune to the fungus – out West in hope of developing a cure.

HBO announced when it renewed the show for Season 2 that the series premiere episode has surpassed 22 million viewers through on-demand formats, five times the audience for the linear broadcast.

Episode 2 of The Last of Us tallied 5.7 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts in the U.S. Sunday night, based on Nielsen and first party data, adding more than 1 million new viewers vs. the series premiere.
