The Handmaid’s Tale actress McKenna Grace, 16, reveals she underwent recent spinal surgery and thanks medical team that tended to her
The Handmaid’s Tale actress McKenna Grace revealed that she underwent surgery on her spine last month in a detailed Instagram post Wednesday.
She said that she was hospitalized the same evening that an episode of the Hulu show depicted her character Esther Keyes awaken in a hospital bed.
Grace said: ‘Occasionally, life imitates art and the night my episode of Handmaid’s Tale where I was in a hospital bed came out, I was actually in a real hospital bed.’

In a montage of clips edited together, she was seen both in the hospital as well as a number of images in which she donned a variety of styles.
She said that it’s been a month since her hospital stint at her spinal surgeon at Cedars-Sinai ‘literally changed [her] life.’
Grace said that ‘social media only reflects what we want people to know-often we don’t see the ugly, hard, less-flattering sides of a person and their life.’
She said that it has been easier for her to ‘hide [her] struggles and insecurities and maybe write about them in songs, but that didn’t fix them.’
Grace was seen recovering in a hospital bed following a procedure on her spine
The TV star was helped by medical assistants as she walked in the hospital
Grace said she was thankful for her doctor and his team, as well as her family and friends
She said she planned in the future ‘to elaborate more about all of this because [her] life and who [she is] and want to be was truly changed’ in the wake of the medical procedure.
Grace thanked her doctor Dr. Skaggs, his physician’s assistant Morgan, his nurse Elaine and their team; her parents ‘who never left [her] side;’ and her loyal friends: ‘My friends who showed me that they are here in the exciting/fun times, but would also be there in the absolute lowest moment of my life.’
She noted that ‘the season finale of Handmaid’s Tale is now streaming,’ adding, ‘Go watch it!’
Grace attended the season five finale event for the series at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on November 7 in Los Angeles
She interspersed footage of herself in a number of different outfits in the social media post
Grace was first seen on the series in the show’s fourth season, portraying the Gilead teen wife who defected to join the rebels.
She appeared in three episodes of the show’s fifth season, including one sequence in which she emerged hospitalized from a coma.
The Handmaid’s Tale showrunner Bruce Miller told The Hollywood Reporter that he expected Grace’s character to be in the show’s sixth and last season.
Grace in recent years has also been seen on the miniseries A Friend of the Family as well as the TV film The Bad Seed Returns.
