Detectives have launched a murder probe after a 16-year-old boy died in what police have described as a ‘tragic incident’.

Police were called to Waterson Vale in Chelmsford at around 11.30pm on Sunday following reports of a boy sustaining serious injuries.

The victim was taken to hospital where he later died, Essex Police said.

An 18-year-old man was detained in the early hours of Monday morning and is now being quizzed by detectives.

In a statement, Detective Chief Inspector Ashley Howard, of Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: ‘This is a tragic incident where a 16-year-old child has lost his life.

‘We have a team of officers working solidly to determine what has happened here and get justice for his family.

‘A cordon has been put in place at Waterson Vale and we are likely to remain there for a while whilst inquiries continue.

‘I know that this may cause disruption, however it is vital we understand how this incident happened.

‘We are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Waterson Vale or surrounding roads in Chelmsford last night and may have witnessed or heard anything, or anyone who has any further information to contact us to assist with this investigation.’

Police officers appear to have sealed off bushes surrounding a playing field in the middle of Waterson Vale, using blue and white tape to cordon the area.

Residents have been raising their concerns about the park, where it is thought the incident took place.

One person, speaking anonymously to EssexLive, said: ‘We’ve lost count of the amount of times we’ve dialled 999 because of that park. Been going on for three years since lockdown, told police there’s drug dealing going on and anti-social behaviour.

‘This is the upshot of it as no one will do anything. We now have a very sad situation where a young man has lost his life.’

News of the incident has shocked the local community, with people taking to social media to pay tribute to the victim – who has not yet been named by police.

One person said: ‘Thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,’ with another adding an ‘angel gone too soon, when will this stop – it needs to stop now’.

Forensic officers are already sweeping the area for clues following the alleged killing, with a number of teams pictured at the scene.

Investigators are now appealing for those with information about the incident to call Essex Police on 101 quoting incident reference 1321 of 12 February. Those with CCTV, doorbell or dash cam footage in the area are also urged to come forward.
