In an unlikely turn of events, a Canadian woman ended up with a set of car keys lodged in her face after her friend threw them to her.

Renée Lariviere, 24, was about to leave her apartment complex in the city of Sudbury in northern Canada to go to McDonald’s when one of her friends threw her car keys to her.

But as Renée grabbed the car key, she somehow stabbed herself in the face in a ‘freak accident’.

Horrifying photos show the metal of the key disappear in Renée’s cheek, leaving the handle sticking out awkwardly while an x-ray shows it buried an inch-and-a half deep into her nasal cavity.

Renée said she didn’t believe that the key had punctured her face to begin with, as the adrenaline prevented her from feeling any pain.

However, after looking in the mirror and seeing the key lodged in her cheek, Renée’s first fear was blindness.

The group of panicked friends called the emergency services, and an ambulance arrived minutes later to take Renée to the Health Sciences North Hospital.

Renée, who works for a landscaping company, said doctors and nurses were ‘amazed’ by the ‘fluke accident’ and now use photos of her as an example to prove ‘anything can happen’.

She said: ‘I felt a pressure, but I felt like I just got hit [with the keys] in the face, like I missed my catch.

‘My friend looked at me and said, “Oh my God, don’t move”, and he started panicking.

‘I guess the adrenaline is pumping, so you don’t feel it right away. I actually didn’t believe him, so I walked to the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror.

‘I was scared. My concern was my eye.’

Renée added: ‘I couldn’t care less about a scar. Scars, if you take care of them properly, will go away. That wasn’t my concern. My concern was, ‘am I going to be able to see?’.

‘It felt like pressure was there constantly, like severe pressure, as if something heavy was on [my] face.

‘The doctors there were amazed. There were doctors coming from different departments to see, because they couldn’t believe it.

‘I had one of them come and ask to take pictures so he could show his students. He was an emergency room doctor, so he was trying to show [them] that anything could happen.’

Renée was immediately seen by medical professionals when she arrived at the hospital, who gave her a CT scan and called in a plastic surgeon to remove the key and stitch up the wound.

Renée said the surgeon confirmed that the key had buried itself within her nasal cavities.

She has since fully recovered without complications and without scarring.

Now, Renée believes that people should be more careful as they go about their day-to-day lives, as she admits that that incident was a ‘near miss’.

Renée said: ‘Looking at it now, I’d think there’s no way that could even happen.

‘Like what are the odds of that happening, or [it’s] just dumb luck I guess, because there is a bit of luck that nothing bad actually happened.

‘It was a near miss. If it had hit somewhere else, it could have done quite a bit of damage.

‘At no point did I lose any eyesight, but I was scared of where they [would] take it out, or that if I moved a certain way it would touch something. But that didn’t happen luckily.

‘It was a relief as soon as they got the results back from the CT scan and said everything was fine.

‘I definitely think people should be more careful. Fluke accidents happen all the time, and I think we don’t realise that.

‘We’re so busy living our day-to-day life, and we don’t realise how many things could happen each day and how much they could hurt us.’
