Dr Karl SLAMS almond milk in coffee and names his two top picks: ‘It’s nothing but expensive water, it’s the worst’

Popular Australian scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki has shocked fans after claiming almond milk lacks nutrition compared to alternatives.

Dr Karl, 73, appeared on Triple J’s podcast with Lachie Pringle stating both regular dairy milk, soy milk and even peanut milk have far more nutrients compared to almond milk.  

‘Almonds are loaded with nutrition and you’d think almond milk would be good, but somehow they’ve managed to extract all the nutrition,’ he said.

Dr Karl added that the end result is essentially ‘very expensive water’ and described it as ‘the worst one of all’.

Sharing his knowledge on Twitter, Dr Karl wrote: ‘I am astonished how the manufacturers of almond milk manage to lose all the good nutrition in almonds and sell something very close to water.

‘There is a wide range of non-dairy milks. Almond milk has one of the lowest set of nutritional values, while soy milk scores much better on the nutrition front.’

Over the past few years, the milk aisles of supermarkets have exploded with different dairy and plant-based milk options for those who have lactose allergies.

Almond milk is a delicious non-milk option that’s low in calories and is made by blending the almonds in water, then is strained to remove the liquid from the solids.

According to Healthline, 240mL of almond milk only contains 39 calories, 3g of fat and a mere 1g of protein, whereas soy milk contains 100 calories and 7g of protein with 4g of fat.

But it’s important to note some brands of almond milk may contain added sugar.

‘Regular milk and soy milk have lots of nutrients, peanut milk has lots of nutrients, the worst one of all is almond milk,’ Dr Karl said.

Some Twitter users were just as shocked at the claims, while others said they need to drink almond milk because it’s their ‘only option’. 

‘For those of us who can’t tolerate dairy, we only have plant-based products like almond milk to use,’ one person wrote. 

Another added how the low nutrient value is low because the plant-based milk contains a low percentage of almonds.
