Now THAT’s home advantage! Guardians pre-game Yankees plans thrown into chaos with hotel OVERBOOKED

The Cleveland Guardians had their pre-game preparations thrown into chaos when their must-win game with the Yankees was postponed on Monday night due to rain.

The Guardians checked out of their hotel and headed to Yankee Stadium, only for the game to be called off late. 

It meant they needed to stay in New York an extra night but as ESPN reporter Eduardo Perez has explained, it was far from easy to organize at such short notice.

He told SportsCenter, prior to Tuesday’s game finally going ahead: ‘The Guardians had to not only check out of their hotel, come [to Yankee Stadium] with their bags, not knowing if their plane was going to back to Cleveland if they lost last night or to Houston [to face the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the ALCS] if they won.

The Guardians checked out of their hotel and then had to find somewhere to stay as the rain fell and stopped them from playing their decider in the Bronx 

‘Now, let’s not forget they checked out, so now they have to go check back into the hotel, but wait a second, the hotel, overbooked.

‘They had to go to a different hotel, yes they did and, not only that, they had to split up the groups.’

The game was scheduled to begin at 7:07pm EDT on Monday night but due to the continuing wet weather Major League Baseball announced at 9:36pm that it had been rescheduled for 4:07pm Tuesday, when shadows at Yankee Stadium will likely impact hitters.

MLB had earlier announced at about 6:20pm that the start was being delayed, over three hours later it confirmed that the game was postponed.

An announcement by public-address announcer Paul Olden informed fans of the impending delay, and the grounds crew at Yankee Stadium covered the infield with the tarp just before 6:40pm. A steady rain started at 7:30pm.

‘To have fans, players come to the ballpark and then ultimately not get to see a game, that’s obviously the worst outcome from our standpoint,’ Chris Marinak, Chief Operations and Strategy Officer for Major League Baseball, told The Athletic.

‘Clearly, if we had had a forecast that indicated this was the range we were going to get, we would have made a decision earlier in the evening to just postpone the game and take a run at it Tuesday.
