Is this breakfast TV’s most awkward moment? Sunrise reporter asks host Natalie Barr how her dog is doing one year after her beloved pooch died

Sunrise host Natalie Barr was stunned when presenter Shaun White asked her about her dog Madonna, one year after the pooch died.

Shaun was presenting a segment about what Australians spend on their pets, when he asked Natalie how her dog was doing.

After the segment, he said: ‘I’m absolutely gobsmacked at how much we spend on these pooches and pussycats. It’s bizarre.’

‘Well, I kind of am and I’m not (surprised),’ Natalie responded.

‘If we do a story about something happening to a dog or a cat, people care more about that than a human. They just do. Don’t you think?’

Natalie’s co-host David Kochie responded: ‘You do. You’re an animal lover’.

Shaun then asked: ‘How’s Madonna going?’

A stunned Natalie hesitated before informing him: ‘Madonna had to be put down.’

‘Oh, Shaun! Why did you bring that up?’ Kochie said.

Kochie then put his arm around Natalie as Shaun replied: ‘I didn’t know. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what to say.’

‘Did you not know? We had to have him put down and Flash (her cat), we had to have her put down last year too,’ Natalie explained.

Shaun then apologised as Natalie said: ‘We all know, it’s part of nature, we all know it has to happen. I’ve come to terms with it.’
