The BBC judge, who experienced racism as a young dancer, said she will never forget that treatment and it is something ‘you carry all your life’.

The star admitted that styling her locks on the dancing show is helping her to heal from those past traumas.

She told The Sun: ‘So even things that I’m really loving to celebrate now, which seem so little to other people, like celebrating my own hair — the way my hair grows, what I can do with my hair — it’s something as a child I didn’t see. It was always more like, ‘Hide your hair, get your hair under control’.’

She told the publication the secret to her hairstyles is working with the stylist and playing around with it, which ‘takes the whole day’.

Motsi, who first dreamed of becoming a lawyer before she moved to Germany at 18 to dance.

She married her dance partner Timo Kulczak, 45, but they divorced after 11 years, in 2014.

After becoming a mother, Motsi revealed her past traumas began to heal as she was forced more and more out of her comfort zone.

She explained that when she was a child her parents were always in ‘survival mode’ and were never affectionate, which she decided was the opposite of the type of mum she wanted to be.

The loving mum explained how her experience with her parents growing up affected the way she is raising her daughter.

She continued: ‘I am very affectionate with my child but we didn’t have that because, for our parents, in their mind, it was just, ‘keep these kids safe’. All of that affects you later on.

‘At dance competitions when it was clearly unfair and your parents are going ‘No, it wasn’t unfair, you have to be better’. Quite early on, our boundaries got taken away from us and I’m learning now to kind of say ‘no’ without having to question myself.’

The dancer found fame in Germany in 2007 while dancing on Let’s Dance and later joined the judging panel in 2011.

She later replaced Darcey Bussell on the Strictly panel in 2019 and at the time had to keep the gig top secret by flying into the country using a fake name.
