Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman was forced to apologise on Saturday night after Tony Adams accidentally swore live on air.

The former footballer, 56, was left thrilled over the judges positive feedback following his and Katya Jones‘ impressive American Smooth to With A Little Help From My Friends by Joe Cocker.

However, Tony appeared to get a little carried away as he let slip a swear word, with presenter Claudia quick to say sorry to fans over the ‘fruity language’ used.

As Claudia addressed his error as he joined her upstairs for his scores, the Arsenal legend remarked: ‘Oh I’m sorry!’ when he realised what he’d done, adding that he was so excited by his comments.

And Tony’s comments certainly warranted the excitement as he garnered his highest scores of the series so far, bagging 26 points. 

The judges were keen to point out how much the sportsman had improved, with Craig Revel Horwood remarking that it was ‘better’.

Watching the action at home, viewers were quick to take to Twitter to praise Tony for his much improved performance. 

One person penned: ‘Tony Adams!! Wow!! Well done fella.’

While another remarked: ‘Katya is VERY clever with the choreography, Tony’s going nowhere.’

With a fourth adding: ‘Go on Tony fantastic dance, so lovely seeing his confidence grow. you are a brave & genius lady.’

Also on the show, Jayde Adams burst into tears after she and Karen Hauer danced the American Smooth to Wind Beneath My Wings to Bette Midler, with the comedian opening up about how it reminds her of her late sister Jenna, who passed away in 2011 from an inoperable brain tumor. They were awarded 31 points.

In her VT, she said: ‘The lyrics really resonate… she was two years older than me and she died 11 years ago. I didn’t just lose a sister, I lost a best friend, a dance partner. This song in particular is very special to me and my family and I hope I can do it justice this week.’

Following the routine, a teary-eyed Shirley Ballas said: ‘I feel like you’re my hero. You’ve represented this number with everybody who’s lost a loved one. I’m really emotional. I’m sure your sister would be proud of you.’

Elsewhere, Will Mellor – who had been struck down with an illness during the week – and Nancy Xu danced the Rumba to The Joker And The Queen by Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift – which gained them a score of 23.

In his VT, the EastEnders star had said: ‘Monday I came into training and after a couple of hours, I felt funny. I’ve come down with a terrible virus.

‘The actual story behind the dance is powerful, it bring me back to a time when I wasn’t in a happy place. Men find it difficult to talk so I hope people see this and go, “Yeah, I am struggling and can reach out, with something there to catch you.’

Will previously opened up about his mental health crisis following the death of his sister nine years ago and the passing of his father in 2020.

Meanwhile, Hamza Yassin topped the leaderboard with an impressive score of 39 points thanks to his sensational Salsa with pro partner Jowita Przystal.

While Fleur East fought to avoid the dance-off again as she wowed with a sizzling Argentine Tango with Vito Coppola, landing them in second place.

Strictly Come Dancing’s results show airs Sunday at 7.15pm on BBC One.
