Stan Lee would have been 100 years old today.

Four years ago, the Marvel Comics visionary – who was born Stanley Martin Lieber and was behind numerous iconic superheroes – passed away at the age of 95 in Los Angeles.

To celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday, Disney+ announced a new documentary to celebrate his life and legacy.

Stan Lee, an original documentary by Disney, will premiere on the streaming service in 2023.

The pop culture revolutionary was born in New York City to Romanian-Jewish immigrants on December 28, 1922. 

At 16 years old, he joined Timely Comics – which later became Marvel as it is known today – and became the editor at 18-years-old.

In the last century, he had co-created some of the most iconic and recognizable superheroes, including – but not limited to – Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, and all of the Avengers.

The genius behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe was honored by various stars and fans on what would have been the centenary of his birth.

Many of his high-profile friends and fans took to social media to dedicate tributes to his memory and legacy.

He wrote in his caption: ‘Happy 100th Birthday to Stan Lee. You are missed, my friend.’

According to his death certificate, he died from heart and respiratory failure due to illnesses he suffered in the past.

In the years leading up to his death, he faced declining health issues but continued to make his features in Marvel films – even posthumously. 

Various other high-profile friends of the late writer also took to social media with touching tributes.

Star Trek alum William Shatner – who was previously rumored to be joining the third installment of the Guardians Of The Galaxy series – also tweeted in memory of Lee: ‘Remembering Stan Lee on his 100th Birthday and Nichelle on her 90th.’

Nichelle Nichols was his costar in the Star Trek franchise – who passed away in July 2022 at the age of 89.

Previously, Nichols – who played Lieutenant Nyota Uhara in the Star Trek franchise – voice acted in Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Animated Series in 1997.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith also wrote a tribute to the late Marvel legend: ‘The Marvel maestro was always a hero of mine, but thanks to making Mallrats with him, we actually became friends!’

The writer and director continued, ‘I miss the Old Man and his endless parade of smiles and good cheer. Happy Birthday, Emperor of Excelsior!’

‘At LA Comic Con, fans left messages for Stan’s centennial. Inspiration. Legend. Hero,’ the tweet read. ‘These are some of the words that came up again and again.’

For a Big Issue interview in 2016, Lee had said his famous quote: ‘The world always needs heroes, whether they’re superheroes or not.’
