Sonya Eddy dies aged 55: General Hospital actress’ shock passing announced by close friend Octavia Spencer: ‘The world lost another creative angel’

General Hospital actress Sonya Eddy has died aged 55, her close friend Octavia Spencer has announced.

Oscar winner Octavia, 52, revealed the tragic loss of Sonya on Tuesday, sharing a poignant snap of the actress and lauding her ‘creative angel’.

She wrote: ‘My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her.

‘My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!

The cause of death is currently unknown. 

Eddy starred on General Hospital from 2006 as non-nonsense head nurse Epiphany Johnson, who was the mother of Stan Johnson.

She appeared in  543 episodes in her recurring role. The role was close to her heart as she was a licensed vocational nurse.

Eddy was born in Concord, California. She majored in Theatre and Dance at University of California, Davis and received her B.A. in 1992.

She made her acting debut in the Ruby Dee’s play Zora Is My Name in 1990. She also appeared on stage in productions such as The Comedy of Errors and Bloody Mary in South Pacific.

She moved to Los Angeles to further her acting career and has appeared in shows including Married… with Children, Seinfeld and Home Improvement, Joan of Arcadia., Those Who Can’t, Glee, 2 Broke Girls and Fresh Off the Boat.  

Executive Producer Frank Valentini paid tribute to the star, saying: ‘I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy. I truly loved her not only as an actress but as a friend.

‘The lights in the hub of the nurses’ station will now be a bit dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed.’
