The two biggest films opening this weekend – Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Ambulance – drew distinctly different box office numbers.

Jeff Fowler’s sequel to the Sega video game franchise will amass an estimated $71M in the first three days from 4,234 theaters, which is +22% over the first film back in 2020 – according to Deadline.

Sonic 2 was a major hit with audiences, scoring 97% (out of 2,500+ ratings) on Rotten Tomatoes as opposed to the 67% critic approval rating (out of 120 reviews).

Demographics showed the $90M-budget PG sci-fi comedy drew 46% of the coveted 18-34 year-old age group of which 61% were men.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stars James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, Ben Schwartz, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey.

Meanwhile, Michael Bay’s $40M-budget remake of Laurits Munch-Petersen’s 2005 movie Ambulancen will only earn $8.5M in its first three days from 3,412 theaters, which has it landing the No. 4 spot.

Universal Pictures’ R-rated action thriller – starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González – was watched by mostly older men with 49% of the audience over age 35.

The No. 2 spot was claimed by Daniel Espinosa’s MCU/SSU flick Morbius – starring Oscar winner Jared Leto – which earned $56.8M in its second week from 4,268 theaters for a total of $126.4M globally.

A24’s R-rated eccentric action dramedy is by far the most beloved by critics with a ‘certified fresh’ 97% approval rating (out of 183 reviews) as well as a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
