Sean Paul fans were left stunned on Wednesday as they realised they’ve been singing his lyrics wrong for years.

The Jamaican rapper, 49, recently revealed that he doesn’t in fact call himself ‘Sean da Paul’ as supposedly heard in several of his hits including 2002’s Get Busy.

In the closing moments of a video documenting the story of the song on Vice’s YouTube, Sean explains that he actually references cricket icon Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who’s name sounds very similar to the star’s.

And with several fans believing that he actually says his own name on the track, many expressed their shock at having been mistaken all this time, with one even remarking: ‘I’ve been been living a lie for 20 years! 

Speaking about the inspiration behind using the cricketer’s name – who Sean mistakenly says is from Trinidad but is actually from Guyana – Sean explains: There’s a famous cricketer in the Caribbean called Shivnarine Chanderpaul. 

‘Everyone was like “Sean da Paul” and that name stuck.

‘Then I just started to say it in shows and met the dude Chanderpaul years later and he’s like “Yo!” But yeah, big up to Shivnarine Chanderpaul.’

And while many people were unaware of the connection, some fans have had a theory they believed for years finally confirmed.

One Twitter user and cricket fan tweeted back in 2017: ‘Fact: I used to think that Sean Paul was shouting out Chanderpaul at the beginning of every song in a weird tribute to the Cricket player.’

And on Thursday, he realised that he’d been right all along as he shared a clip of Sean’s explanation alongside the caption: ‘Omg.’

As followers quickly rushed to comment on his theory, he quipped: ‘Might be the biggest revelation of 2022.’

With the news spreading about the truth of the lyric, others were quick to air their surprise, with one sharing: ‘Omg, I had no idea’.

Another tweeted: ‘This is literally life changing’, with a third stating: ‘This has made my day.’

A fourth fan couldn’t believe they were in the dark for two decades, writing: ‘I been living a lie for 20 years.’

‘This is unreal. Like discovering aliens are actually making crop circles. Making me question a lot of things in my life today ngl’ commented a fifth.

With another adding: ‘If you’re going to learn one thing today, make it this.. mind blown.’

This isn’t the only surprising revelation the Gimme The Light hitmaker has made this year. 

Sean revealed in August that just like many others, he also took up a new hobby in lockdown, and is now is a very keen gardener. 

The hitmaker admitted he has quite the green fingers and has even launched his own Scotch bonnet pepper sauce, named after his latest album, Scorcha.

Speaking to The Sun about his new venture he detailed: ‘I do gardening. I’ve got a little patch ready in my garden and I planted eggplants, tomatoes, lettuce, pak choi, and also sweet peppers and scotch bonnet peppers. 

‘The scotch bonnets are still bearing now, and I picked about 60 of them yesterday. When I’m on tour I have people to take care of them for me.

‘I’ve got so many that I’m starting my own pepper sauce, called Scorcha. It’s going to be available near the end of the year.’
